SD footage for HD output

I have hours of SD footage that I would like to edit together to be played normally and with the highest quality on my HD TV. Should I edit it in regular 720x480, or import the footage to a HD aspect ratio. If so what one would be the best to use? Any other adice, or things not to do would be welcome. Thanks!!!
 
Well to be honest there's many ways to go about this. Do you want to spend no money or are you open to buying new hardware or a software plug-in?

Willing to spend a little for plug-ins and such. Would not like to purchase hardware. It doesn't need to to be broadcast ready or anything. Shot it mostly with my DVX 100 and looks good. However some of the older stuff I would like to use was shot with my Sony Digital 8, so yeah, that doesn't look good on any TV. That is the footage I am worried mostly about.
