SCSI raid or fw800 for BetacamSP?

Hi all,

I'm about to install a Kona LS card into a g5 dual 2 gig power mac with pci-x. I know, I know, I going backwards in time. I'm re cutting a feature length comedy I did years ago.

G5 Specs:

FCS 5.1.4
3.5 gigs of memory
G-Raid 500gb fw800
Lacie 500gb fw800
Glyph 500gb fw400
Sony DSR-45 DV deck
BVW-75 Betacam Deck

No wise cracks about the three different drives. 2 are clients drives. The G-Raid is mine. :)

I have a couple of questions about setting up drives for this:

Do I need a raid setup such as ATTO scsi UL4D (as kona manual suggests) or can I get away with a G-Raid hooked up to FW800 (says it handles 2 RT tracks of 8-bit SD)?

Those SCSI drives are expensive and this is pci-x technology after all. Thinking when I move on to a Mac Pro this setup will remain a Beta edit station. Maybe there's a less expensive scsi route I'm missing?

If the G-Raid will work, should I install a separate FW800 card in the g5 to get the G-Raid off the same bus as my dsr-45 (fw400) DV deck? I've heard that fw800 is only as fast as the slowest thing on the firewire bus (i.e-dsr-45 slows it to fw400).

Appreciate any thoughts.

best,

Rich
