Scrolling text in FCP?

doh! See, no option for .png....
That's a weird one.

I seem to be getting more options than you. PS v.8.0 hmmmmmm....

Anyways, what Ulanta was saying should work. PSD file. Just Save As -> Photoshop File but make sure (if you don't want to deal with the layers being tracks) to un-check the LAYERS. By default if you have 2 or more layers, this is checked.

As for Boris, I've never used it. I did take a peak at it a long time ago (FCP v.3? Didn't it use to come with Premiere when it was on the MAC?) and thought, I'm pretty good at photoshop, do I really need to learn another app? But I will check it out again. Or I should throw in the towel and learn Motion already. I have a book coming in soon, can't wait.

Sorry for responding quickly before and then not responding for 3 hours. Me and my lady friend went to see Bond, James Bond. That was the best 007 I've seen in a LONG time.

I do all my scrolling credits in FCP, no problems. But then, I'm following an outlined method to do it correctly inside FCP. I don't have any problems at all. I show my students the proper method and they are all suprised, as they all did it wrong up til then.

Coffee,

I use FCP for my scrolling credits as well. You definitely get more flexibility using Photoshop, but if you just want the same size text to move across the screen, FCP will do the job nicely. If you need help just give me a shout.

Chris

I think that someone could so us all a favor and just and put a Sample PNG and Also the FCP file, so that way we can just edit the PNG under the same name, Ie. scrolltext.png and that way it can be copied and inserted in a timeline of choice.

Also, CHV has a great text plug-in at a great price for FCP. Will do more than PS can do and all inside FCP. If you're really not happy with the FCP text generators, I'd go with this plug-in first.

BenB thanks for that link. I will be checking that out for sure. I don't see a link to download a demo version. But will consider it as I don't always like to go into PS to do simple titling tasks when the FCP text generator isn't doing it for me.

My main gripes about the FCP is not being able to change font sizes and colors independently and even though I choose to Align Center:

it always ends up running off the bottom of the page and I have to re-center the whole frame in the Motions tab AND if I chose Align Left/Right:

Align Left

Align Right

the text does the same thing but to the right or left! For that alone I open PS. But if I'm putting up video meant for the web where text is hard to read then I just use the built-in FCP TG, making all the text huge and bold so it is easier to read.

Ben, outlined method?

cheers.

I think he means the method taught in the Apple Training Series books. I'm just guessing though, since his signature says, "- Apple Certified Trainer -"

If you want to do scrolling text in FCP:

Now, in the canvas window goto the "Controls" tab and input your text in the text window. Use the (*) as the separator with a space or two on either side. You can make all your adjustments to text on the the Controls page, then drag it to the timeline...

The * is clutch. Thanks, Blaine.
