Scrim vs. Protective Screen

This may be a dumb question, but is there a difference between the protective screen that comes with a typical Lowell DP light and the scrims you can purchase? I know the scrims come with an attachment to place in the barndoors as where the "protective screen" attaches right on the light itself, but practically speaking, is there a difference? They both do the same thing, right? I'm looking at attachments to buy and can't see a reason to buy the scrim...any thoughts are appreciated.

The protective Lowell screens (for the DP lights) are supposed to allow 70% through so they do essentially the same thing as the regular scrims but to a lesser degree.

.

Yeah, scrims will just cut a lot more light than that protective screen. They also don't fade over time like ND gel does.

That's sort of the reason people use them.
