Screen grabs

First off, does anyone think I should delete this topic and put it somewhere else. I didn't give it much time, but I figured this was a decent place.

What is the difference between a screen grab from my AG-DVC30 (3 CCD camera) and a still picture? I guess I'm asking what the quality differnce is as far as resolution/pixels, etc.? And, if I use one of those in a project and have it stoped on that screen grab then have it start out on the screen grab and play from there... will the viewer notice a differnce in quality?

I'm going to play around with it, and see what I come up with, but I figured the DVX community could help me out too.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Screen grabs

A screen grab from video is the same resolution as the video -- 720x480. If you went from the video straight to the still, you'd never notice a difference.

However, it's much, much lower resolution than pretty much any digital photo worth looking at.

Re: Screen grabs

If you're talking about a still picture taking on 35mm film, or a 6+ megapixel DSLR, those images will have far greater resolution than a screen grab from DV footage.

DV footage will obviously look just fine on a tv, but if you export that image to Photoshop, you'll quickly see that it can't be enlarged much without exhibiting horrible and very noticeable artifacting.

If you're just keeping your screen grab in the DV domain, there's no problem.

Not sure I quite understand your other question, about the still frame. Are you saying you want to start a clip on a freeze frame, then have the video continue playing from that frozen frame?

If so, all you need to do is select that frame in your NLE timeline (I use FCP, but I imagine most NLE's have a "make freeze frame" option), choose "make freeze frame", which will give you a still image, then place your motion video after that on the timeline.

As for a difference in quality, if it's all DV footage, the only difference between the freeze frame and the motion footage (besides the motion), will be the absence of any moving image noise/grain in the still. You can always add noise/grain via some filter.

Hope this helps.

Re: Screen grabs

Thanks guys, this helps a lot. Sorry I'm not more clear, it seems like I have trouble clarifying on this board.
