Screeching Noice in vegas pro 13

I recorded some audio on a tascam DR100 Mk II (wav) and then imported to vegas.

When i play the recording in Vegas each time I re-position the cursor, I get a short duration screeching noise. It's not present when I play the wav file in windows media player.

Any explanation/remedy?

When I render to mp3 I do not hear defects.
 
Just edited a project where most of the audio was recorded on the same machine; no problems.

Sound drivers, perhaps?
 
Problem solved by a member of dvinfo - the screeching noise occurs when your media is on an external disk - copy everything over to an internal hard drive and the problem goes away.

Its possible that it I were to connect the external hard drive to a faster USB port, I might not experience the problem.

More experimentation will be needed to see if the specific drive I am using is on a slow usb port . if so, I will re-connect the drive to a faster USB port and see what happens.
 
OK. I always transfer all materials into internal drives before editing (while backing up to external drives frequently), so if that's the issue, that's why I didn't experience the problem.

It's good that the problem is sorted.

BTW.... Do you edit with the media on SSD drives or on traditional spinning drives? If yes, is there a big performance difference?
 
I have had this happen with audio from a Zoom H4n on a USB drive, USB3 if I recall correctly. Video files on the same USB drive was ok as far as I recall. Suspect it's a Vegas bug
 
@wjauch... Interesting and very helpful input.

I too, have not seen issues with video files that are on USB drives whilst these are being edited. The problem only happens when you set a new position on the timeline. If you render, the end product has no issues.

So, given that you report that you had the same problem with a Zoom H4n and that I have been observing this with audio from a Tascam DR100 MII, we can probably say it is NOT the field recorders.

It may well be a bug in Vegas. I am on Vegas 13 actually, I don't recall this problem when I had prior releases of Vegas i.e. 9 or 11.
 
I had a very similar problem. WAV files stored on a 2TB Seagate Expansion USB 3.0 drive, when imported into Vegas Pro 12 would have audible screeches every 3 seconds. The files played fine in other software, only Vegas took issue.

Moving the files to a different drive solved the problem, and that drive was also and external USB 3.0 drive, but 3TB.

So I removed the 2TB Seagate from its enclosure, plugged it in via SATA on the motherboard, and Windows told me it needed to be formatted. So I moved it back to the enclosure, and it read the files fine. So the drive was in some way linked to the USB adapter of the enclosure — maybe it stored part of the TOC or partition information that's usually stored on the actual logic board of the drive?

I then took an empty 1TB drive that I've used countless times successfully with Vegas, and attached it to the 2TB drive's USB adapter, formatted it, then copied the WAV files on to it. When I then proceeded to drop them into Vegas, the same screech glitches occurred.

I then took the 2TB drive, put it into a different enclosure that I've used successfully with Vegas, formatted the drive, and then copied the WAV files on to it. When I then dropped those copies into Vegas, they worked perfectly fine.

So it seems like it has something to do with the SATA to USB controller adapters in some of these drives, but it's not all of them since the 3TB Seagate I have works fine and the adapter looks almost identical.
