you horror fruits will be happy to know his last role was in a horror movie called "skinwalkers" There's a single comment on the film over at IMDB: "James Doohan ("Scotty" from Star Trek) turns in a fine performance as the retired Judge."

oh and the guy who invented the TV dinner died too. the first swanson tv dinner was turkey with cornbread dressing and gravy with sweet peas. no dessert.

I met James in 1989 when he stopped at the TV station I used to work for and did an interview. Unfortunately, I never got a copy of that video - (like so many others).

He seemed to be a nice, down-to-Earth type of guywith a friendly smile and he posed for pics and signed autographs for fans/employees.

He's one of those faces that is etched in our childhood memories. The old tv series, the movies. He'll definitely never be forgotten.

Mr. Swanson too.

I was sad to hear about James Doohan. He was one of my favorite characters on that show.

I thought I heard once on NPR that the genesis of the Swanson TV dinners was that Swanson bought or had railcars full of food, and that it was going to go bad because he didn't have the right distribution to sell the stuff.

So, he invented a new kind of product, the TV dinner, and got it out in stores as quick as he could, as a 'promo' type thing. They sold out, and so Swanson said, 'Hey, lets make more of these...'

At least, that is what my feverish brain remembers.

Jimmy was one heck of a fine human being and will be very much missed. A side note - he is to be cremated and some of his ashes will be sent into space. Now that is one fine tribute!

Wow, I wonder if her is the first to ever have that honor.

Star Trek's creator, Gene Roddenberry, also had his ashes sent into space.

I met Doohan in 1992. He was very friendly, posed for photos etc., and told some old war stories. He was a fighter pilot in WW2 and once had to make an emergency landing on a busy highway!

Warp speed, Mr. Scott.
