Scorsese and Almendros: New York Stories

Does not appear to be a diopter for lack of seam and lack of camera being in the reflection... perhaps an optical printer? Seems to be the only way.

Either way, both are masters of story telling and I love this vignette, not to mention this scene.... the dynamics and composition are just astounding.

Nestor Alemendros was an outstanding cinematographer, sh*t, he shot "Days of Heaven" for Pete's sake. One of my favorite films he shot is Truffaut's "The Man Who Loved Women"; very naturalistic. And, of course, Scorsese... shaaa. Scorsese did a similar shot, also with Nick Nolte, in "Cape Fear", which is obviously a composite shot. I saw the movie in a theater and remember seeing matte line weave and a little fringing around Nolte's head in that shot (Nolte is CU and Jessica Lange is in sharp focus in the BG, Nolte is looking in a mirror). It has been years since I saw "New York Stories" so, I don't know about those shots.
