score before or after edit?

I am editing a short and am getting all kinds of resistance from the composer. I want to get a score so that I can edit to music and not the opposite. So what comes first the score or the edit?

Usually you would score the film after the visual edit. However, as in most things to do with film, there is no set way.

It's actually refreshing for someone to think of music before the shoot and make it an integral part of the process, although you may be making things difficult for yourself in the fact that you'll have to make sure that your timing of the shots you want is perfect.

If it is a narrative film and there is information that is critical to audience understanding, you run the rsik of finding that you can't edit it in time with the music.

As Decadence said thee is no rule. Often though "temp" music will be used early on. The composer is then stuck with trying to compose something that gives the director the same feel that they have been editing to. I would think the composer would be happy to get in earlier and have to play less catch-up but?
