Scope lens on DVX

Is there any way to get a 2x anamorphic lens (scope) to fit on the DVX, without using an expensive mini35 adapter?  I really want to shoot scope for my film.  I have look online, but I can't find any.  Does anyone know of a store that sells 2x lenses?

Re: Scope lens on DVX

the only way i know to go scope with the DVX is shooting with the Panasonic's 16:9 anamorphic and crop to 2.35:1

Re: Scope lens on DVX

what would happen if you used the anamorphic lens and squeeze at the same time?

Re: Scope lens on DVX

Easyest way is to shoot with the anamorphic adapter and crop the video in Vegas or Premiere. Most flexible for this job is Vegas because you can move the croping frame as you like.

If you are using the anamorpnic adapter with the squeeze option and import the footage into a 2:1 timeline, the result is an almost perfect 2.35:1.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

I don't want the resolution loss, though. I know there are 2x anamorphic lenses out there, I just can't find any lol.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

Right but using the anamorphic in conjunction with the squeeze (provided youy're shooting in progressive mode) would give you the highest quality 2.35:1 short of someone making a full scope adapter for the DVX.

Better find a way to frame for that though, it'll look REALLY stretched on your LCD/viewfinder.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

Hi :)

First, you don't want a 2x lens for the DVX. You would need something like a 1.75 (which has been made before but they are quite rare) which would give you a 2.25 or so.

Using tha panasonic anamorphic + letterbox is the highest quality way to go at the moment.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

There is an other way. If you can find a Kowa PA-35 lens and make some custom adapter to put it on your DVX than you can get a 2.24:1.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

I found a 2x lens for sale, but it says the thread diameter is 42-52mm. I can't find a step down ring that goes from 72mm to 52/42mm. Would it work to buy a step down ring that goes from say 72mm to 62mm, and then attach another ring from 62mm to 52mm and then finally attach the lens to that?

Re: Scope lens on DVX

That would work. If you go this route you will probably end up with some serious vignetting. You will most likely need a macro lens as well.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

Remember you'll only be showing it in 4:3 Letterboxed, or 16:9 letterboxed in the end anyways...so shooting *in 2.35:1* isn't important, you'll probably have an even softer image by downscaling it to 16:9 with letterboxing.

Your best bet is to shoot with the regular anamorphic adaptor (with a 1.33x squeeze) and shoot in letterboxed mode. That will get you razor sharp images in 16:9, and is the highest possible quality to attain 2.35:1 for viewing on HDTVs with the DVX.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

I understand what you're saying, but I'm planning for a film out. I love the look of scope, but I can't bear to lose the resolution of shooting with letterbox + ana adapter. And Vignetting doesn't bother me, but I am very torn on whether or not to just buy this. Its ebay, so its now or never.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

90 bucks right now... Worth getting anyway, but I'm sure I'd have to rig something to support it, not to mention, I'd have to buy those 2 step down rings.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

You do realize that a 2x lens will give you a 2.66 aspect ratio instead of the 2.35 cinemascope?

For something closer to 2.35 you would want a 1.75x

Re: Scope lens on DVX

My biggest worry is sharpness. Granted, there is a sharpness control built into the dvx.

And I do realize that it will give a 2.66:1 image, but that can be cropped. If I could find a 1.75x lens, that would be fine, but this 2x has fallen into my lap and it's hard to pass it up.

Re: Scope lens on DVX

First, if you're PLANNING to have a film blowup, it's folly to shoot on the DVX in the first place. You'll get an infinitely better blowup by having shot on film in the first place, at about the same net cost.

Second, if you're worried about image sharpness, putting a $90 projector lens on front of your camera is not likely to yield satisfactory results. You may get lucky with it, but it sure doesn't sound too promising.

So... a) good luck, b) get the lens if you want to try it, and send an e-mail to the second-place bidder saying that if it doesn't work for your purposes, you'd be glad to sell it to him/her at their bid price, so the most you'll be risking is like $10 or whatever the winning bid increment is over the second-place bidder.
