oh my gosh! this semester is almost over. i suppose to have only 2 classes left until i get a associate's degree. but in order for me to take 1 of of those 2 classes, i have to pass my math class this semester! sh*t. i don't think i am passing. grrr, so many classes. i can't wait until i go to university school to get a ba in comm. design/ advertising.

just thought i would share. :)

ahh yes! me too i can't wait to get this semester over and done with!
I'm changing my major right now to tv/film/new media, and I have until April to submit my portfolio. It's gonna be tough, they only let in 50% of the people who apply, but hopefully I can turn in something cool, like a sci-fi movie, and they'll be impressed.

seriously though, this community is a large reason why I'm changing majors. It's so much more fun than art history! all i do is write term papers, ugh!

I love being my age. I can plan ahead maddd far and see what choices people are making when it comes to being successful in the industry.

I'm sorta thinking rite now...when i graduate highschool..im gonna shoot all the way for PhD level in film...not sure yet....first thing i gatta do though is pass Business law though before anything! YIKES!

I can't wait till this semester is over. It's my freshman year of college, so I am doing all the dumb classes. I have to write an 8 page paper on the effing trojan nuclear plant. LAME

Oh so that's where those condoms come from!

An 8 page paper on condoms would deffinetly be more interesting than this crap let me tell you. I should just give the teacher a picture of chuck norris and call it good....

Film Studies actually kind of blows. For instance, my last paper was a research paper on the marketing, distribution, and box office success of two 1960s films and I had 55 sources cited (of about 80 I considered using) and spent countless hours in the microfilm room reading awful awful articles in Variety magazine. Crewing for student films is worse--12 hour days with no food which eat up your weekend with call times at sunrise. Such BS.

If you enjoy movies, you may not enjoy film studies....

The field is off the charts competitive, too, if you want to get a job. I'm getting an MFA if any terminal degree. No way I'm wasting 8 more years of my life with this junk. (To be fair, you do learn a TON.)

Just apply twice, then it's a sure thing!

Yeah, forget film school and film studies. You can study films on your own time. Just get out there and make films!!!!

funny you should say that. I actually get 2 chances. but not at the same time:cry:

policar, where do you go to school?
I think I'm going to be in your boat next semester because i'm taking international cinema and some other bs pre-req.

dude, i wish i was in your position. TCU doesn't accept portfolios, they base people getting into the major by GPA. now that is crap in my opinion. basically the good test takers get in the major, but they have no skills whatsoever. and me on the other hand, where it's my passion to do this stuff and where my skills are strengthening get the short end of the stick. i'm a horrible test taker and my GPA isn't that great. i'm making good grades for all the classes within the major, but i can't get into the classes that i would really shine in because the bastards with better GPA's are in it.

i wish my school was based off of talent and not grade progression. they would weed through 90% of the people and see who really wants to be there. it's just horrible seeing the students pop out bad product after bad product. for crying out loud, i know more than they do and they are taking the upper level classes! eh, screw them. it's really who you know in the business that gets you where you want to be. i continue to work on lighting and camera work and i'll get there. i would laugh in everyone elses faces when this happens, but i'm better than that. damn politics in the school system here at TCU.

well, we may be more similar than you think. SDSU has a bunch of requirements:

1. complete theatre 100 and TFM 160 with a B or higher
2. complete a personal statement to be evaluated by the TFM faculty.
3. submit 2 letters of recommendation " " "
4. complete a minimum of 15 transferable semester units
5. Have a cum GPA of 3.0 or higher (counselor told me that 3.4 is really what they want since major is so impacted)
6. submit samples of creative work.
7. submit a treatment for a 1-3 min production.
8. submit trannies

so although my weak point is GPA, my strong point may be my actual work.
I'm not sure what other students are submitting.
But I bet you most of them don't own a DVX, and most of them aren't members of DVXuser.com
So I am feeling pretty good about it, but I still have a lot of work to do the next 6 months.

next semester I HAVE to take:
1. theatre and civilization (pass with a B)
2. telecommunications and film writing
3. heritage of dramatic literature
4. audio production
5. cinema as art and communication(pass with a B)

next semester is gonna be rough. probably not as rough as the one i'm in now (11 term papers- one of which i'm supposed to be doing now).
I transfered here with a 2.9 gpa, i have to get that sucker up!
I basically have to get an A in every class if I want to stand a chance.
The really cool part is I am a complete n00b to all of this, so I'm going to learn A TON!

Not top notch advice.

Pookie, did you got to films school?

I did...went to University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Very avante movies. I think they should show those film in prison as torture.

I do admit there are art movies that are good. I'm still looking for the "great" art films...but even good artsy ones are very very few and further between.

Learn by doing...

Of course there are "very reputable" film school out there. Like Andrew Leslie (spelling?) that DP for Lords of the Rings was from AFI. USC film school has the USC connection which networks film alumni with current grads.

But for people like me who can't afford AFI or USC...I'll spend the tuition money on some equipment and shoot.

I don't have money either...that's why the gov't is paying my way:laugh:
seriously though, where else am i going to get the chance to shoot a 16mm film?
(besides actually renting the equipment and spending tons of money)
school is going to give me some opportunities I otherwise wouldn't have.
it's just annoying how much work is involved to actually get to the fun stuff.:cheesy:

yah, 16mm short films would be great if my school did more of them. the cinematography class only makes minute films! they need to make 10 minute films atleast. you could learn so much more with a running time that long.

i doubt the cinematography class gives any good ideas on how to light well too. i've seen the films of older students and they suck bad. they all had to do the same set ups for shots. wide shot, close up, insert, close up, wideshot. boring stuff with no camera movement. the lighting was horrible because you couldn't see half the room. it makes me wonder why i'm still going to this school.

haha, well at least your football team beat ours.

i don't know much about the quality of the films that the students are putting out, but i'd imagine they're alright because we have 3 levels of 16mm classes.
the last one (advanced 16mm) the students sole project is to make a short. so it's gotta be longer than one minute.

you go to TCU right?
are you Christian?
