schoeps mk-41 + cut1 filter?

hello.

i haven't been active on here much in the last month or two.

i did a feature in the end of july and beginning of august.

then i did a nice two day shoot on for a 6 minute short.

i had planned on taking a break after that but i wound up doing sound for a feature being shot only 20 miles from where i live.

so anyway, i've been having fun playing with the deva V and i have also been working with the holophone h-1 (the surround sound mic that looks like a mannequin head)

but for primary dialog i am still using my schoeps wherever i can.

i just ordered the cut1 filter as i have had a few scenes where there have been really low noises that my sd 442 couldn't get with its high pass filter.

can someone please give me a short rundown on the best way to use the cut1 filter to its potential?

i'm doing 12-14 hour days for the next week and a half till the shoot wraps and i'd like to get up to speed with the cut1 as much as possible with my current schedule!

well i am wondering what sort of situations it will really help me out in...

like two nights ago we were shooting in a restaurant/bar after they closed and we were able to shut off anything we wanted to cut down on noise.

but after pulling the plug on every freezer/cooler etc. there was still a low hum that the sd 442 wasn't able to get with its high pass filter.

is this something that the cut1 might have been able to fix?

or like today, there were two takes where we had airplane noise (jet up very high) and another where there was a small outboard motor on a tiny boat far from where we were shooting.

would the cut1 have been useful in any of these situations?

The Cut1 kills the low end at the mic thereby preventing the mic from distorting from low end heavy noises. Low end distortion will damage the rest of the signal.

Beyond that it doesn't do any better job of rolling off the low end, just does it earlier.

I forget exactly but it also boosts the overall signal by like 3db.

If you are getting the Cut1 you are probably gonna want the collete cable and/or swivel. With the Cut1 the mk41 becomes quite long and harder to get into cramped areas.

How's the DEVA working for you? I have only played with a DEVA IV but never used one in production...except in my dreams.

Good luck with your gig.

Cheers

puling 5db up what is nice with pure preamps
doesnt improve anything or kill more, usually good to prevent boom rumble or fast boom swings where the mic get hits from the wind
