SCARLET / EPIC swiss army knife camera details announced

Great thread, alas something SEXY to look forward to,
Anybody know what would be the est price for the scarlet 35, with the essential needed add ons?Roughly i'm guessing about 25-30k?

I'm going to be bold and pick dates: August 31 for S35, October 12 for 2/3" Cinema, and December 14 for fixed.

Prediction includes some shipping back orders, and bugs with the first batch of probably all three versions.

:-Dum(DBG):

Haha I don't think the word "bold" exactly covers that asumption! :)

But cool prediction though. I can't wait to see if it will come true. I think that the scarlet is for me...but who knows!

Well this is memorial day weekend coming up. After that is "Summer 2009". They should revised those estimated dates from their spec page. Or just remove them.
I see late "2009" in my crystal ball... it would be much better for my tax deductions!!

Well, technically summer doesn't start until June 22nd. And it ends Sept 21st. So they have some time to go.

Jim once said if they can't delivery by autumn, it would be pretty pathetic. Considering that autumn ends in late December, I think they'll reach that date one way or the other with at least one camera. Especially as they have put up a few test shots so far. But if they do end up delayed until after the 1st of the year, it would certainly behoove them to announce the delay as soon as possible. Any excuse for the delay will be scoffed at by quite a few considering their boisterous past assertions, but there could be legit justifications for such a delay, mainly the global economic meltdown - something Jim himself has even written about on their site.

Jim Jannard already posted a few disclaimers about POSSIBLE delays, due to the economy, to their doing a new ASIC chip, and to difficulties getting parts from some vendors. I would be happy to see a release by the end of the year.

Definitely not that much. I would guess, more realistically, you're looking at 15k for a fully equipped scarlet with the 35mm sensor.

Why do I have a feeling that a VDSLR at 1/4 of the price could come out and steal the Scarlet's thunder before it is even released? The 5D MKII already did in a way.

It's already happening/happened. I think it's the difference between what's best versus what is most convenient. At the moment I'm thinking of Scarlet like the betamax vs vhs or Ipod vs dvd audio battle. Scarlet quality will be better, but there is something about just grabbing your camera with built in LCD and not needing any other accessories and shooting. I mean that's why the Flip camera caught on. It's small and fully functional and fits in your pocket. GH1 and 5D are small and unobtrusive and are already freeing people up creatively. If Canon ever wakes up and releases a 24P manual control VDSLR it would steal some serious Red thunder. As usual they're playing wait and respond to what catches on while Panasonic pushes the industry.

Hopefully Canon's rumored XL-H1 style APS-C sensor camera will actually become reality next year. It is frustrating though, that Canon could just give us a proper 24p manual DSLR now. Same with Nikon. Although we still don't have the skinny on the D400 yet. Maybe they'll knock it out of the park on the third time at bat?

As for the Scarlet, I'm sure it will take awesome motion pictures, but I'm starting to wonder if it will be the right camera for me. First off, I will only be able to afford the 2/3 sensor one. Right now, with the vDSLR market beginning to really deliver with stuff like the GH-1, a 2/3 sensor is just not as exciting anymore. Low light is important to me, so right there the comparative gap between a 2/3 and APS-C or m4/3 sensor is pretty big. Also, the storage space requirements and workflow with a Red camera are not really me cup of tea either. Of course, the Redcode is robust and you have the flexibility of RAW while in post, but I don't know if I need all that. Same with 4K, 3K, etc... sure it is nice to have, but is it really needed? For some of us it might be, but for many others a good solid 1080p is plenty. Hell, a solid 720p is enough for a lot of situations.

For many Hollywood movies 1080p is enough, actually for the most I might say. The most pro digital cinema camereas record in 1080p. I know I won't need more than that, it's enough for any big screen.
I actually have the luck and pleasure to see our recent short movie which I shot on a 5D Mark II on the big screen this week! And I'm pretty sure it'll look amazing.
But yeah.. I wish Canon would come around and fix some of the issues with DSLR video...
on the other hand I can understand them not delivering... if they make it too good a lot of people might drop their Canon pro camcorders for good.

No one wants to release the new cameras more than I do. Please consider the following:

1. It is very difficult what we are attempting to pull off. If you don't believe that, look at any other program by the biggest camera companies on the planet.

2. The market sucks. It is a terrible time to release anything.

3. We are not going to release a prototype again. When we get it right, we'll release it.

4. The new releases are based on ASICs. Very complicated ASICs. Keep your fingers crossed that they actually work. We should know pretty soon.

5. We will put the new cameras through a ton of testing before release and do most of the firmware updates with a small group before releasing production cameras.

6. If you think this is easy and we should already be shipping, dust off your checkbook and try this yourself. Just be prepared to shoot yourself in the back of the head for making that decision.

Jim

looks like we are going to be looking at 2010 for the s35, bummer.

Boy, I'm surprised.

Not.

Someday the Scarlet will come and it will be awesome but in the meantime, the 5D is pretty cool for the money. Just bought my second Canon L lens for it. This reinforces that I am going to keep the 5D MKII.
