Scared to fly to a gig?

Alright. I'll be the 1st to admit it.

I got a gig in Halifax this weekend, and I fly out Thursday.

Now I'm not really THAT bad anymore, but I'm pretty freakin' terrified to fly anywhere nevermind just 3 provinces over.

Since I seem to be getting more work out of province, any tips from any veterans on how to combat this phobia ( aside from the usual tasty combustable and/ or 2oz shot )

I'd like to be able to fly and arrive with a clear head and save the 'treats' for the wrap.

Years ago, I shot "Fear of Flying" classes (I still remember shooting a plane on final approach on 2x, maybe a mile out, and seeing it sliding left and right, with the nose at an angle into the wind. Oh wait, that didn't help, did it? Sorry!).

Using professional counselors, they start small and over various stages in classes, gradually work their way up to having students walk onto parked planes, look in the cockpit, meet pilots, etc. Eventually, they take a flight together.

These are for people with serious flying phobias, which might be overkill for you, and won't help for Thursday, but may be food (not smoke or drink) for thought.

One way or another, better to learn how to deal with the fears, rather than mask them.
Good luck!

Just remember, the pilots are professionals.

I had to fly to a gig in the Bahamas last year, on Abaco Island. The plane we took from Florida had an aisle down the middle, with 1 seat on each side. I was right up front. I had just gotten over the horror of watching the co-pilot take pictures from the cockpit, hardly paying attention to anything else going on, when I could see through the cockpit that we were landing on a little strip of runway that looked carved out of the jungle. I thought I was landing on the set of Baa Baa Black Sheep.

My only advice is to remember that there are tens of thousands of people in the air above North America at any given time during the day. They tend to land safely.

Dude... honestly... if you don't have an ipod... get one... and I highly recommend V-Moda Bass Freq (don't let the name fool you... set your ipod on FLAT and they sound perfect... I sold Etymotics and kept the V-Modas)... anyway... get this setup and you can get lost in the music... and feel detached from the flight.

That's my single best advice... no matter how heavy the turbulence on some flights I've had... and some have been insane... I still had a fun flight because of the music... and feeling a sense of detachment from the reality.

Trust me... this works great.

I've got an ipod, but the headphones suck. I'm going to take your word for it, and grab a set of the V-Moda's first thing in the morning.... thanx for the heads up

You can get these on ebay for DIRT CHEAP! I originally bought them on Amazon for $25... then got them at $20/each on a free ship deal (again, Amazon, so I bought two pair)... I found some on ebay for $15/each and bought a couple more pair (I've been giving these as gifts for a while now)... and recently some guy had them on ebay for TWO for $15!... so... guess what? I bought two MORE pair... I may even buy more after talking to you... so that I have some gifts ready to go.

I've bought a total of 8-10 or so sets (did that cover it above?)... I left one of the early sets on a plane myself... recently my brother expressed the same conundrum... with flying... and so, of course... I gave him a set. He came back from his trip RAVING about them.

Trust me on this... (since you said you trusted me)... you want the Bass Freq model! NOT the higher end metal ones... I've been through a half-dozen very high-end IEM... and these work the best for ipods (they do NOT have "too much bass" if you set your ipod to FLAT EQ)... then they're simply perfect. No ipod type device has excess power for deep bass... so why not use IEM/cans that compensate, creating a really solid sound?

These FIT better then any other IEM I've ever had as well. Prior to these I had $90 Sony... and during the past few years that I've used these I decided to treat myself to some $200 Etymotics... I used the Etymotics 3 times... then rushed back to these (sold the Etymotics for cheap... on here). My home cans are HD600... and my mixing cans are HD-25-1... in case you think I'm trying to Bose you on this... I'm not. These things are the best deal in IEM I've found... and you won't even HEAR the plane... the whole trip will feel like a fun ride at Disney World... even on the roughest flights I was more amused by the turbulence then anything else... trying hard not to laugh as a businessman a few seats up was white-nuckling his seat.

Emily... I had to take the URL link out of those words... because I'm sure you're moments from being handled by a mod... but this is such a perfect response to my over-explanation that I had to save the reply before it goes away.

Now THAT is funny... the next time somebody is babbling on too long about something on here I want to use that response...

...totally unrelated reply... yet so effectively insulting... and ironically, coincidence.

You think you're talking to a human?...Probably a spam bot that got triggered by the words "Scared to fly"

Vince the music on the way, and the knowledge you are going to one of the best cities in Canada. I know those wordws are small, but maybe it will help.

Why are people scared to fly? I am only scared of standing around stupid airports, dealing with the sub-moron IQ of the typical TSA cattle herders. Getting onto the plane and into the air is the reward.

I hate flying coach if that counts.

It is so worth the extra money and if the plane goes down the first class section ejects from the plane and floats to Hawaii.

Flying to me is boring. The only exciting parts are take-offs and landings. Otherwise, you're in a bus with wings.

I'm taking your advice and ordering a pair from Amazon. We'll see how these do!
