i need to scan images that will be as part of a production's b roll.

if i shoot sd what dpi should i set my scanner for?

i imagine for sd the frame size should be 640 x 480?

what would the dpi be for a hd production?

how about hd frame size?

obviously, i know very little about doing this correctly.

any and all specific input would be greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance for sharing your experience

will you be zooming/panning around them in post, or will they be completely static on screen? I've found it's best to scan everything at multiple dpi, as a photo will look fine at one dpi but crap at another, and sometimes the lower dpi looks better - higher dpi usually looks better, but other times can produce weird moire and banding effects, especially if zooming/panning.

I'm presuming that your editing software can display any size picture, shrinking or expanding it as necessary to fill the screen - that's certainly how Vagas works, and its native zooming/panning is excellent.

clang-

i will be using the scanned pix in fcp. there will indeed be a wee bit of a push in/out or a pan/tilt move- all the stuff that made "ken burns" so popular!

what dpi/screen size combos do u use?

any detailed explaination would be quite welcomed.

as soon as you start push in/out, your editing software is valiantly trying to convert the actual picture to the screen resolution and thus doing lots of averaging calculations - in general, the highest resolution will do the best as your software has more data to average from. But do some test using the type of photos you'll actually need at your camera's highest res - things like lots of parallel lines or checks or stripes etc can generate some horrible results. And of course don't push in too far or it will start looking dotty.
