Scandles - good or bad?

I have lots of Kino Flos. I have 2 4 banks and 2 Parabean 200s.

I use them to keep the room cool. I do need a few more directional lights and was thinking about getting some Lowell Scandles.

Does anyone use these? Are they really good for a beam of light or are they duds?

I live in LA and cannot find anyone who has them on display. If anyone knows a store in LA that stocks them then please let me know.

I have a couple of these, picked 'em up cheap on ebay.

I really like 'em. I didn't know what to make of them when I got 'em, they sort of look like the Death Star. But they put out a decent beam of light, they're directional, with the "dog collar" cone reflector they're pretty bright -- not exactly an HMI, but on an overcast day they can almost serve as a stand-in for one, if all you need is a little accent here or there. We used them extensively on Siren, and they're the lights Jarred used to shoot the HVX with. It's no parabeam, but it's punchier than a CaseLight.

They're a little weird, they're kind of big, but they're really flexible in the configurations you can use 'em. They don't get hot, they come with a "shower cap" diffuser that turns 'em into a passable imitation of a Chimera (and they include speed rings so you can use 'em with Chimeras too)... overall I'd say they have a permanent place in my kit. I use the CaseLights more, but the Scandles are surprisingly endearing.

I've only got daylight tubes; they take 8 tubes and that would cost some coin to stock 'em with tungsten too. They're bright, so I just keep a sheet of CTO with 'em, if you need tungsten it's a whole lot easier to just clip some CTO over it than it is to change out eight tubes. So if you can only afford one color of lamp, get the daylights...

A lot of money for little wattage, in my opinion, and expensive globes to boot. I guess for that kind of money I just rather have several lights to choose from.

bear in mind those are not hard lights and more difficult to control and less versital. But if you need something that stays cool, I guess it would be a reasonable option.

I might pick a few up. I just got the 2 Parabeam 200s and that is the best thing I ever bought in my life. I am amazed at how far those little guys can throw light.

I detest hotlights, don't understand how anyone can work with them for extended periods of time unless you are in a cold evironment.

Barry - thanks for the info :)

Keep in mind I got 'em cheap on ebay. I don't even know what the retail price is for them, so definitely try-before-you-buy and make sure you're happy with them.
