Scandisk why is it running?

Since this is a talk about anything you want forum, I am wondering why everytime I turn on my computer (PC) my Scandisk thing comes up on the screen and checks the HD for errors. Well I have left it for a few hours to let it do its thing and it never corrects anything! However I have been just hitting cancel and then I go about my business on the computer or surfing the internet. How can I look into this further as to why this is happening. It says that there was an improper shutdown but I shut the computer down the same way all the time so I have no idea why its even doing it. I am glad I have my MAC for all the video editing stuff though.

Re: Scandisk why is it running?

sounds like you are running win98, or something along that line. you can try to defrag, if you have already, there are harddisk diagnostic utilities you can get off places like download .com (trial stuff) sounds to me like it could be the operating system itself, but don't know for sure. ever since i moved to xp, i haven't had any problems like that. anyway, i would back up anything useful you have on your disk, cause either way if it is the drive or the OS, you could be looking for trouble.

Re: Scandisk why is it running?

Scandisk will run anytime Windows does not shutdown properly. Instances:

You shut down, but before the OS shuts down the computer (with Smart BIOS) or before it says "It is okay to shut down your computer", then you are not allowing for the full shut down process to complete and are in fact making the error occur.

If this is not the case, then there is a problem with your Windows System files and when you do shut down it doesn't end all the process correctly. It will think you just turned off your computer and will run the ScanDisk Improper shut down utility as a safe guard. The ScanDisk utility checks for bad sectors and broken files along with the User Journal and any inconsistencies that it might contain. It will fix them and then rerun to ensure proper running. Even though it doesn't say there are any errors, it if has something to do with the User Journal, it won't display or report the error.

If you are really concerned about the whole thing, then download SpyBot S&D. It will scan your system for any third party spyware or adware and usually cleans up and stupid **** that happens.

Re: Scandisk why is it running?

scndsk can also be set to run everytime you turn the pc on ..whether it shut down right or not. check to see that its not set to run all the time through the system diagnostic tools.
