Greetings! I have done what I'm trying to do before, but not on my current Intel-based setup...
Basically, I have a 2-camera shoot. Both in 480p30, one an HVX in "SQUEEZE" and one from the original DVX.
I'm trying to scale the DVX footage to widescreen (of course, losing the top and bottom of the image).
Here's the problem: If I set the sequence for either upper OR lower field dominance, the HVX footage looks fine; the DVX footage, when scaled, gets some strange interlace-like artifacts. Not tearing, but a certain alternate-scanline artifacting on horizintal-ish lines. (This is a wide shot of a stage performance; so, in the small faces, for example, the eyes may cover three scanlines, and have the "middle" scanline flesh-color instead of eye-color, etc).
If I set the timeline to NO field dominance, this is what happens:
1) as soon as I exit the Sequence Settings, the image is clean, exactly what I want.
2) if I play the video, or move the playhead in any way, the image becomes severely blocky (I'd estimate 4x4 pixel plocks). If I move back and forth on the timeline with the arrow keys, the one frame that was properly rendered when exiting the sequence settings is fine, the rest are blocky. But once I play video, that frame goes bad, too.
3) Exporting the video results in the same issues as the screen display
Is this a familiar problem to anyone? Like I say, I've done this on FCP 5, with my old PowerPC computer, without these issues. But my current setup (Mac Pro Quad 2.66, FCP 6, Intensity) consistently exhibits these problems. It seems to be that something in the scaling algorithm is trying to compensate for interlacing. I've temporarily worked around this satisfactorily by resizing in Photoshop, but would like to avoid that in the future!
Sorry not to have images to show right now... if noone's heard of the problem, I'll post some.
