SC Mayor bans cop foot chases to save ins. $

There might be some credble logic behind this but mayor's conduct in interview doesn't exactly lend credibility to her viewpoint, LOL.

(Wellford, SC)—The Mayor of Wellford is defending her policy which bans police officers in that city from chasing suspects. Sallie Peake says the policy also includes vehicle chases along with pursuits on foot.

A memo issued on September 2nd from Peake to all Wellford officers reads:

“As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any suspects whatsoever.“

crook knocks old lady down, takes hand bag
as he runs away ...
Cop: Stop! Stop! Police! ... er ... hey can we get an address? name? ... anything?
:)

Ohhh boy..... I like the "worlds dumbest criminal" videos, now there will be the "worlds dumbest" mayor videos. Well, I gess there is already 1.

Lets go rob the cop shop on foot!

And with that they can say goodbye to the city.

I mean here when high speed chases go past a certain speed, or are deemed too dangerous, they have to stop chasing after the culprit. That's understandable, even though it tells the criminal that they just have to drive recklessly and then they'll get away.

But to ban any chases, even foot chases!?

I smell a movie out of this:

~In a world where chasing down criminals isn't allowed~

Mafia Thug (nervous): What do I do if the cops show up man!?

Mafia Boss: Just run, not particularly fast, don't wear yourself out. They don't chase in this town.

~In a city where crime has risen by 70%~

Mob Boss: This city is ours boys! Steal anything and everything, even from the cops!

~One man decides to take the law in his own hands~

Mafia thug running: Hey man! I thought you weren't supposed to chase me! It's against the law!

Arnold: I AM the LAW!

3 officers injured during foot chases in the last two years.... how much money is she saving again?

More than the over-the-top policy (always has to be all or nothing these days) is her attitude... I wouldn't want someone incapable of phrasing a reasoned argument for his/her decision making any big decisions like that... Particularly, a decision which literally can and likely will have some impact on the well-being of a citizen at some point or another.

Preposterous. The whole thing sounds insane. And her behavior is not something that would encourage me to re-elect her.

However, the entire thing might need to be kept in perspective, in that the population of the town is about 2,000. There were 3 robberies in all of 2007, 12 burglaries, and 67 thefts. 6 cars were stolen all year. It's not like there's a tremendous amount of crime going on, so the practical impact might not be that huge. But that alone, on the other hand, makes it likely VERY easy to see if this policy is going to lead to a substantial increase in crime!

You know every bored teenager in the nieghboring towns are going to have fun with this.

Reminds me of a documentary about a dog that was elected mayor, it aired on Animal Planet. The guy that produced it is a member here and it might have also been in SC.

Barry,

What's the average household income in this town divided by the number of HD tv sets (don't forget blu ray players).

I might have a plan.

Obviously she's got a screw loose...
Years ago in my city- pop 88k, the head of the police instituted a "no exceeding the speed limit for car chases" rule. He spent weeks trying to explain it to the public before it was abandoned.......

They are pretty hard core here about police car chases as in they are a bad thing, every kid on a crotch rocket (aka donor bike) takes off when they are being pulled over, the police can't pursue if it's going to be a high speed chase or have to stop if it goes over 70mph (they have dash cams) and the kids get away everytime. It's pretty funny but that will come to an end as soon as someone gets killed.

Barry, you have to put that in perspective. NYC had 115,318 thefts reported in 2007. Wellford, SC had 67. But taking the general population into account, NYC had ONLY 1403 thefts per 100,000 residents. If Wellford had 100,000 residents, that number would be 2894. That's twice as bad. It's far from a quiet town when cops don't really have much to do. At least it doesn't seem so from the stats we're both using.

Well, avg household income is 35,000, vs. the state average of 43,000, so it's definitely a lower-income town. Not sure how many would have HDTVs or blu-ray players.

But, hey, it says the *cops* can't chase you; doesn't say anything about the homeowners!

Well, yeah, but -- 67 thefts. That's one a week. They have at least two police officers, right? I would have to think there's a whole lot more thumb-twiddlin' going on down at the Wellford police station than at any NYC station. Plus, with only 2,000 residents, the average complaint is likely to be "that no good rotten chicken thief Roger Hapgood stole my chicken" more so than a 911 call about a murder, right?

So I guess the question is: what's the officer-to-crime ratio, at any given time? I bet it's a lot more officers to crimes in Wellford than in NYC.

The entire thing is completely absurd!
Who the hell voted for her?? That has me more baffled than anything else. She came off extremely bad during that interview.

I thought I was watching a video from The Onion.

That mayor is an idiot.

edit: 3 hours later and I've decided this may be the weirdest thing I've ever seen
