SAW

Re: SAW

I'm not sure how indie it is.  I know it appeared at sundance and thats how it got attention.  And I know it was made my two film grads.  One of the grads played the one character Adam from what I heard and that guy was pretty young.

oh and also...the ending wasn't something hollywood would let happen. It definitley was is not a typical hollywood ending.

Re: SAW

The ending was the only part which was pretty cool.

Adam's acting was really good, the other guy...not so much, and I've seen him before somewhere too...

Re: SAW

that's Cary Elwes.

he's famous for his role in The Princess Bride. and other great comedy like Men in tights.

and Adam's acting was laughable. why? because everytime he spole the audience was laughing.

That part at the end was laughable too when they both reached eached other.

the part where adam pounded with that marble slate was gruesome!

Re: SAW

yeah I didn't think Elwes acting was that great either. and yeah there were a lot of people in my theatre laughing at parts that were not suppose to be funny.

Re: SAW

geez, that was him! man...he's too comical, I couldn't take him serious, especially when he cried...I was like...come on...

Re: SAW

if Saw had had no acting it would have been fantastic....

photography -- fit the movie well

editing -- very good

story -- cool, outside hollywoods usual

ending -- great

acting -- killed what could have been a breakout film.

sad too. overall i liked it. alot more than the grudge too, for those who wanted to compare. i felt like i was watching someithing dvx users would make, minus cary elwes and danny glover. some parts definately looked digital to me.

see it, you could totally make a similiar film on a dvx, and with some good acting, make yourself known.

Re: SAW

dudes, I just saw this movie and it was not as gruesome as story of Ricky. From 1- 10 I give this movie a 7.

Re: SAW

Er, why does everyone keep calling this movie "non-hollywood"? The movie, (while entertaining, aside from the occasional pockets of weak writing which then created bigger pitfalls for weak writing) is painfully derivative of "Se7en", which is technically very much a hollywood movie.  (And "surprise, there's a twist(TM)!" have been a hollywood staple for years now)

Several bits of dialogue were cribbed directly from Morgan Freeman's speech about John Doe ("He's preaching..."), along with the joke about the crazy person running around covered in peanut butter ("He's a nutbag...probably sitting around in his grandma's underwear, rubbing himself with peanut butter oooh, ahh." - Brad Pitt, paraphrased), to say nothing of the conceit, a killer which devises gruesome ways to kill people based on their individual weaknesses or "crimes" against humanity.

I don't know. I saw this movie, I was entertained,  but it's definitely the younger, less capable, brother of Se7en, which was amazing in that it managed to make the killer almost sympathetic, and almost make sense. Watch the scene with the three leads in the cab at the end of the Se7en.  There's not a scene with that much weight anywhere in SAW.

The acting was weak at times, but I wonder how much of that was the director's fault, not having better control of the tone of the movie?

---spoiler below----

p.s. Why in the world did the guy want to take out the orderly, he was nice, and actually spoke up for him. I must have missed something, but what?

Re: SAW

Me and a friend saw "The Grudge" and "Saw" on the same day. "The Grudge" is relatively well-made and has some effective shots, but it's not very scary, and it crumbles like sand in the face of "Saw".

Re: SAW

I haven't seen this, but people tell me go see it, I bet you won't know who the killer is, or expected it to be.

alright.

Re: SAW

I just saw the grudge the other day and thought it was soo close to the ring in a lot of places...the story sucked, but I did like the special effects...the ending was horrible

I just had a conversation with a guy who said that the "bad acting" in Saw might have been done on purpose?? I told him that would be stupid...

Re: SAW

I saw it as well last week.. and the acting was so bad.. I dont understand the casting.. It was comedic people doing serious roles.. they even had the token "dumb" girl from the Becker sitcom being tortured.. just didnt work.. but anyways, If it wasnt for such a remarkable ending the movie would of been garbage.. but because of it I do suggest seeing it.

Hope not to spoil anything, but there is forshadowing for the ending, The very first time you see "dude" his chest moves i.e. breath.. I went to the movie after being in an edit suite for 12 hours so I thought I was just being more than critical, but I realized after the fact that it indeed was intentional.

Re: SAW

that's cool you caught it, I was too busy going:

We're men, MANLY MEN, we're men in tights, TIGHT TIGHTS! :)

Re: SAW

...sigh...

See...it's the song they sing in Men in Tights...

It's the movie that Cary Elwes...where he played Robin Hood...and he wore tights...
