Saw an XDcam/XDcamHD demo... Not impressed

Hey Shooter, why don't you just save some money and get the HVX for now, and skip over to the Red camera when it comes out. Surely, it's worth saving a bit for and theres a good chance you'll have the dough to pick it up when it comes out, whereas laying out 25k+ in the next year may make it that much more difficult.

The Red will not be shipping a year from now, i gaurantee that. And NBC can easily pay for his toys by then. I already paid off my HVX and that was in two days of shooting.

First of all, whats with this judging of a camera on a 17" monitor? How many times...

One other thing, those XDcam discs are $30 each and in the 35Mb mode the record 30 or so min. of HD.

Doesn't anybody actually read the spec sheets? Where in the hell did the 30 mins come from? In 35mbps mode the HD XDCAM records 60 mins of HD. Thats 50c a minute.

The CBS O&O departments are all taking delivery of 330's plus decks in March. The fact that a major broadcaster has adopted the camera in a large way says a lot to me.

And what does the fact that MTV bought 25 of the JVC HD say to you? Networks want large form cameras to uphold a certain "IMAGE". I plan on making a cardboard "trojan camera" to go around the HVX... and I'll gladly save the money from my chiropracor for not having to lug a large camera around all day. Gee, lugging a 20 pound camera is FUN!

I think it is more to do with wanting a robust camera that they can trust having used XDCAM in all their other departments. The fact that MTV bought JVC's says to me the same thing. That they bought the cameras because after having evaluated them they decided that they were the best cameras for the purpose they would be using them for.

You got a reel online Justyn?

Really? I didn't know that, I thought the O&Os were getting PDW530s! Cool! I'LL HAVE A RENTAL CAMERA IF I BUY A 330!

The fact that MTV bought JVC's validates the fact that MTV is the cheapest network on cable (I've shot for them, I KNOW how cheap they are)!!!

The Sony rep at Sundance told us it would record 30 Min. If I'm wrong then tell Sony to educate thier sales reps better.

To me, it says they're tired of getting their DVX's fixed. The DVX is a fine, fine camera for personal use, but as soon as they get in a fleet where each one is used EVERY DAY, by people that don't care about them, they start falling apart. I've seen some very ratty DVX's at places like MTV.

Granted the JVC isn't going to be much better like that, but...it would be better.

: What is the maximum recording time on the Professional Disc media?

A: Recording time varies with format and data rate. The approximate recording times for the
PFD23 Professional Disc media are as follows:
85 minutes - DVCAM format
68 minutes - MPEG IMX 30 Mb/s format
55 minutes - MPEG IMX 40 Mb/s format
45 minutes - MPEG IMX 50 Mb/s format

I can vouche for MTV as being super cheap.. and also acting like they are doing you a service by hiring ya. ESPN is the same.. as well as any Scripps/Howard show I've done.

I currently don't have my reel online. I'm putting something together this month, but I'm having to learn HTML and dreamweaver at the same time. I figured it's better to be self-sufficient at websites than be hostage to someone I know. I am hoping to have something up by the middle of March. I'll send you a PM when I do have it up there. My site will be at www.hdbaby.com Nothing there now.

I do also have to update my reel. And actually have to split it now... one for live events, docs/reality, narrative and instructional/commercial.

Do you have a reel online? I tell you what.. now that I think about it. You could check out some extreme sports I shot at www.xsportstv.com

Also, my rep told me he's sold about 100 JVC hds to date, but hasn't sold one Canon. I like how wellbuilt the canon is, but that viewfinder seems tough on the eyes and the price is kind of out there.

Any other opinions on that one?
