Saving/Rendering Keys? And proxies in Final Cut?

1) Is it possible to save / render a key done on a piece of footage, once you are happy with it, retaining the transparency, so no more rendering is needed. What is the best way to do this? And will this benefit workflow?

2) Also, I’ve just discovered that you can work with proxies (lower res versions of hi res files, in After Effects) Is this possible in Final Cut? and is this the same as an EDL (Edit Decision List)?

Regards for any help

1) After you've done a key on something, you don't want to save the "Render" of the transparency, you want to save the Alpha file. I haven't done this in a long while, so I'll let someone else chime in on doing this. I believe though you'll want to save stuff out using the Animation codec in order to properly preserve transparency for FCP (again, hopefully someone else can confirm or correct this).

2) FCP basically is a proxy in terms of what you see. There are various pull down menus and options to further even degrade the proxy image as is too (I think, man coffee just doesn't do it anymore, I'll have to start the day w/ Red Bull I think). Unless you mean offline/online workflow, then yes, again possible in FCP. Just digitize footage with a low resolution codec (like Photo JPEG). Then once picture is locked, media manage an offline project and then re-digitize at online resolution.

3) EDL is certainly not a proxy. Most commonly used for onlining purposes or going back to film (if you've been editing with a digital intermediate, which basically everyone does in today's day and age). Really all it is a text file with all the timecode in and outs for all the clips you used (and their associated reels/tapes).

cheers.

Ack, my bad. Just semantics I suppose, but its not the Alpha "file" you're wanting to save, rather the Alpha "channel." Sorry about that. Its been a long week.
