Saving Private Ryan effect

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone could help me with replicating the effect in Saving Private Ryan (and other films) where they are storming the beach and everything goes muffled and sounds far away... this is often done when a bomb goes off to show that the person is disoriented and can't hear very well...

Low-pass filter? You can even adjust it with keyframes in most NLE so it'll slowly change to that particular effect.
