saving footage to dvd

I shoot adult so its 30 minute scenes, all my harddrives are full so want to start getting the edited scenes off my computer. I have dual layer discs, what would be the best encoding to save room but still be good enough if I need to use the footage again? Thanks

Are they DV?

You should easily be able to fit 30min of DV on One Dual layer disc.

But you can fit 60 on a DV tape for the same price.

its shot with a dvx100a its sd should I use mpeg2 or avi?

well, if you want to re-edit later DV-avi should be your choice, or some form of lossless quicktime format.

It isnt harder to edit mpeg2 SD than mpeg2 HD (HDV) so convert it to DVD isnt all that bad. But on the other hand Its always easier to handle the miniDV format. You could always split the scene on 2 DVDs and store as AVI. Thats is cheap.

Or . . . you can print back to tape.

But the problem with printing to tape is that you risk dropouts alot more. And that it takes realtime to move it back to the hard drive. With a DVD you should be to edit on the fly. (more or less)
