Save Time Selection to New .veg File?

Suppose you have a time selection across multiple tracks. Can you save just what is selected within the time selction to a new .veg file? I tried copying and pasting in new file, but this doesn't seem to work.

What doesn't work?  You should be able to do that (copy and paste the selected region).

You should have two Vegas, one with the footage you want to make in to a new veg then copy and paste in to other open Vegas.

Ctrl/A to select all

Ctrll/T to discard everything except what's in the time selection

Save As new project

I used Gary's method and worked OK. Not sure what Hunter means by two Vegas. I tried opening another Vegas window, and creating a new file and pasting to it, but there was no command for pasting?? I also copied the time selection, but when I created a new file and tried to past to it, again there was no paste command highlighter in the edit dropdown? I am definately missing something here.

Crtl/C copy
Ctrl/V paste

Was there something about the steps I outlined that did not accomplish what you are trying to do?

Your method worked fine, but if I am understanding things right, David and Hunter accomplish the same thing differently (but in a way that I cannot duplicate). I just want to understand and be able to do both ways. I got the right outcome using your method, but I am still missing how to copy the time selection and then start a new file and past the contents of the time selection into the new file while keeping the original file intact. Your method stays in the current file, and just deletes everything but the timeline contents, which you then save to a new filename. But how do I copy the timeline and past into a completely new file?

Sorry, but I am still not getting this to work. I made time selection, selected all (this selects all tracks, even outside time selection), copy, then (and this is where I think I am doing the wrong thing) I select File, New, and try to paste in the new file. but the paste command is not highlighted so I can't use it???? I also tried opening a new Vegas window (by clicking on the Vegas icon in desktop and proceeding as above) but still not luck.

Re: Save Time Selection to New .veg File?

OK, got it to work. I didn't realize that two session of Vegas had to be open BEFORE copying and pasting. I was opening the new session AFTER copying to clipboard, and the new session had nothing on the clipboard when I went to paste. Sorry about that.

Re: Save Time Selection to New .veg File?

Yes, opening a new instance of Vegas means to do it from the icon, not File>new.

In any case, it should not matter if the new one is open before the copy is made. It works fine for me in the sequence I laid out for you.

Re: Save Time Selection to New .veg File?

Yes, I stand corrected. I just opened a new Vegas sequence AFTER copying from the existing sequence, and it worked fine. I guess my problem was with going to File>New and trying to paste after closing the file I was pasting from (all in the same Vegas sequence).

Now, at the risk of beating a dead horse: I was able to copy the contents of the tracks as described above, but the Parent/Child compositing relationships did not also come over. Is there a way to transfer all of this so what is playing in the copied version is exactly the same as what existed in the original? Thanks again.

Thanks Gary. I realized after my last post that your original response would have solved the problem of saving the compositing relationships of the tracks.
