Save Footage to Computer Directly When Recording

When I am filming in my studio I have to import the data from the SD card from my external recorder and from my camera.
Import the audio and then import the footage.

But I'm curious to know if there would be a way to record footage directly onto the computer (via cable)? Rather than having to go back and forth from my camera setup, grab the SD card and upload it, and wait another several minutes while it uploads.
Is there a faster way?
 
Yes, but it depends on the camera. My RED Scarlet Dragon is able to stream to an app called RED Tether over gigabit Ethernet and record .R3Ds directly to disk. I use it when I have to film long talks or performances and it can be very convenient.

In an SD card workflow, could you use something like an Eye-Fi?
 
Most of us shoot to some sort of card and then transfer to a portable drive ( or the client transfers the footage to a portable drive that they provide ).

That process seems rather silly when it would be much easier if the camera recorded directly to an external drive. If a camera can be made to record to an SxS card, CF card, or XQD card ( all of which are in essence just miniature portable drives ), why can't a camera be made to record to an external drive? Not to an external recorder such as the Odyssey Q, but to a drive like the Lacie drives that are so widely used.
 
Off the top of my head: OBS, Wirecast, vMix, QuickTime Pro, Metus Ingest, CasparCG, Blackmagic Media Express (only supports their capture cards,) Xeus Ingest, Telestream Pipeline, Ingex, Softron MovieRecorder and MagicSoft Recorder.
 
We record studio shoots directly to Premiere. Don't ask me how. Someone else manages that part of the project. But it can be done.
