Savage 3k watt light kit - Worth it?

imagewest its vent cooled, no fan, and you can dim them.

and someone left on comment on adorama saying that they can't get replacement bulbs on savage lights if they break, but im sure you could.

but besides that there essentially the same.

Note: The savage lights can be dimmed. I'm almost certian that both of those kits use the same bulbs, the guy on BH probably didn't understand that you don't have to have "savage" bulbs.

Yes, I have used these lights extensively. The good: inexpensive, nice even light, fixtures take 500 or 1000w bulbs, dimmable. The bad: long and exhausting set up time, poor construction (softbox material will wear and rip pretty quickly, rods will bend and break), noisy fans in heads, kit is extremely heavy and included bag doesn't have wheels... I would only recommend this kit if you absolutely don't have the budget for anything more and you are transporting your gear via automobile (I live in the city) and you have plenty of time for set ups and breakdowns (or you're working in a studio setting).

good to know. I read some old threads saying the build quality was good but the transport was tough. Does the softbox have an egg crate?

If it's similar enough to the kit my buddy has, no I don't think they have egg crate and the fans are a pain in the butt. I would find something else or figure out a way to add a switch for the fans.

No egg crates. The build quality is not very good and they are tough to lug around... I would try to pick up a Lowel Rifa softbox (perhaps used?) and a few Lowel lights (maybe an Omni and Tota) with umbrellas or frost for diffusion. You can even pick up a few dome lights on the cheap... That being said, I did have many successful shoots with the Savage kit and they do provide you with a lot of high quality diffused light (with the three 1000w bulbs). I shot in many restaurants with mood lighting (read near total darkness) and they saved my ass. If you do pick up the kit just keep in mind that it has its limitations, but you can work around them.
