Satellite Radio Anyone?

I got Xm about 6 months ago and have become a huge fan of it. It is just incredible, I get my baseball talk, good music stations, and when I travel I never have to search for anything.

I was just wondering if many people around here have it, either XM or Serius and what they think about it.

XM for a bit over a year now... I hate riding in other folks' cars now. Can't bear to listen to "free" radio anymore!

ya.. got XM for a free 90day trial with my new car and ended up signing up for a year. it is good to listen to radio again without all the bull ****. the commercails on regular FM just got too anoying. and the playlists sucked. XM has a pretty wide selection. but i would like to see even more underground stuff on there.

Am I the only one thinking about getting Sirius?

Glad to hear everyone's happy with their sattelite setup though.

I've got 7200 songs on my iPod and that's all I listen to.

Exactly. In my car... on my computer (itunes)... at work... at the gym (yeah, right!)... wherever.

Radio, in its current incarnation, is a dying medium.

I think sooner or later the two providers will have to merge, but I am with XM because that is what I originally got. When Stern was announced I almost changed to Sirius but XM has MLB. Pretty much the only station I listen to is 175, MLB Homeplate, but I just love the options.

It's true there isn't a lot of great underground stuff, and I do think radio is changing, but I am completely addicted to my XM. I used to make fun of people for paying for radio, not the idea of not having it with me at all times has cost me the cost of that portable MyFi player. I want my XM at home, work, and car. It's the greatest thing there is.

I just found out tonight that Directv had XM sat stations. I was groovin' to the classic Soul channel. It makes me want to get it for my car. WAY better than crappy Clear Channel broadcasts.

I used to laugh at the idea of paying for radio; but I have heard good things about XM and Sirius. And it is true; coporate radio sucks as does the FCC. I'm considering it

I'm on the family plan thing (a bunch of friends and I all share an account so we get it for $6.99/mo) and it's the only check I write that I enjoy writing.

Cable is like $150 for TV and internet and I hate that. Power is like $100, and I hate that. Rent, car, renters insurance, water bill, hate those. Radio, I don't mind.

i find that there is a difference when you pop a cd into the stereo or mp3 player vs when you are surprised by what comes on the radio. it is a good feeling. someting unexpected. the only thing i hope for from satellite is that they play more 'new' music. there are a couple of really good electronic stations but i want to hear more unsigned bands. that would really put it over the top for me.

The ONLY reason I'm not on Sirius right now is because of the total initial cost. As soon as work picks up again I'll replace my Alpine with a Sirius equipped whatever... and sign up. My brother's been on Sirius since the very first month it was available (like 3 years ago or more!)

I've been getting by on a cd-changer for a while... but as I get a little older I like to just listen to other random stuff... and Sirius makes more sense then ever. Howard got a little too gay sometimes, but man, in comparison to every other show on I see why he lands the contracts he does.

Ever hear that commercial that makes it sound like a juicy national enquirer report... and then it ends with an operator's voice just before the reveal and says, "deposit twentyfive cents please"? Then it goes on to say "radio, you shouldn't have to pay for it"... as you sit through 20 minutes of commercials.

Huh... I've always heard "time is money"... and nobody's been paying me to listen to the average 10 hours a month of commercials that I sit through on FM.

Sirius is a bargain. It's not just about what you get (previously unavailable programming and VAST choice)... it's also about what you don't get (no commercials on most stations... and so many stations that it doesn't matter that a few have them!)

It comes down to what's important to you. Personally the commercials don't bother me, I just want to have a variety of what I listen to. I love baseball, so XM has the baseball channel and as long as they do, I'll stick with XM.

Radios right now for XM and serious are down to $25.

I'd like to see satellite radios/MP3 players the size of a iPod Nano that could easily be plugged into (or communicate wirelessly with) car stereos and home entertainment systems.

I'm a news and current events hog, so I LOVE Sirius... got it about six months ago. And yup, I've listened to Howard -- but sorry, I think he's more than just a bit played out.

You're telling me I can replace my Alpine car stereo with a Sirius equipped one for $25? Sign me up!

Okay siriusly... my brother's only ***** is the stupid fm-modulator thingy that he got instead of replacing the entire stereo... which is a little more then $25. If you want DIGITAL satellite radio you need to replace the stereo with a digital receiver... otherwise you're still working on an FM frequency and it's not as clear/reliable.

Is it still like that or can you turn a good stereo into a DIGITAL receiver now?

I got XM radio in my new car back in the spring and when the 3 month trial ran out I continued it. For me it is great because I commute 4-hours (2-hours each way) every day for work.

The FM modulator works decent if you have a decent stereo, but the problem with it is if you drive through multiple radio markets you have to keep changing the broadcast station. When we drove to Southern California last year in my dad's car with XM via FM modulation we had to change the frequency used at least 5 times. So a unit with the sateliite built in woudl be the best, but the other does work well. Also, if your unit has a tape deck, the car kit includes an adapter that plugs into the tape player and that works very well.

Just my $0.01 9/10

I have a tape adapter that I currently use in my car and have had no problems with that other than the wire running through. My portable XM receiver can store up to five hours of broadcast though, that's pretty cool.
