I'm looking into a used sachtler video 14 II. It handles up to around 30 pounds. That sounds cool, but what's the lowest weight it can go and still work well. My rig is about 15-18 lbs. with a monitor attached it's maxing out my libec h-38 and I can't get balanced tilts anymore.. so I'm looking for an upgrade. My budget for a head is about 800-900 bucks, is there anything else better in that price range?

thanks!

well I guess we'll find out in a couple weeks when it gets here. Anyone know of a cheap floor spreader that will work with this, like the manfrottos or any other brand?

You'll be fine with your rig. It is right in there as far as correct weight. A client of mine used to have one of these that I shot with about 10 years ago with a DXC-537H Betacam.

You might have been pushing it if your rig was just four or five pounds like a stock camera but since you have all of the accessories and toys, you will be happy.

cool, glad to know that. So do you remember how the performance was comapred to the newer models? They're going for relatively good prices on ebay and I'm curious as to how it's going to stack up against the libec 38.

well, I've had this guy for around a week now and I must say it's pretty kickass. It works really well with my weight range. Also the idea that I can go up to 33lbs if I wanted to is very reassuring. Balances well, no bounce back and very smooth. The Libec's legs are better, ergonomic wise, also easier to set up and fold down, but otherwise I am very satisfied with this Sachtler.

edit to add:

I stripped my gear and added pieces until I could do balanced tilts without tipping or bounceback. It seems this tripod(at least the one I have) starts to become very usable at ~10lbs. A 10- 30 lbs range seems pretty baddass if you ask me:)

A Sachtler is a Sactler, I have not yet met one that I did not like. I used to own the Video 20 and now I own the DV-6SB. They have both been killer heads. And I often rent the Varicam and it comes with the Cine 30. A little heavy for the Varicam but what an amazing tool.

Love the Sachtler.
