Sanken CS-1 mic

Ideally, I would like a run & gun on cam mic for my Panasonic HVX-200 that
could also be used on a boom pole. I have a good shotgun (Sony C-76) but it is long and ungainly on the camera (sounds great though). I have been leaning towards a 4053A or a blueline preamp with hyper capsule. Today I ran
across some tests of the Sanken CS-1 on the net and the reviewers loved it for a run and gun mount. What do you guys think of it and would it perform well on a boom pole compared to the above mics?

I know that this mic is a controversial mic since it is neither a shotgun nor a hyper. From what I have read it is better than a shotgun interiors and better than a hyper exteriors (which to me means that it would be better to just use the right mic in the first place [shotgun or hyper]). I have heard complaints that it doesn't sound very warm. I will admit that I was thinking the same thing and looked into it here and other places. I could not find a solid endorsement for it. It may be a great, versitile on camera mic for run and gun in and out. I would be interested to hear some samples.

Hmmm- since I already have a shotgun I like, I mainly need the interior/hyper capabilities whether on camera or on boom pole. Back to the drawing board I guess.

I really like the oktava for the money and there is no way I will ever sell mine. I think with the right shockmount and wind protection it would be a great on cam mic. The blueline ck93 seems like a great middle ground. People say it cuts through the mix well and I would say give it a try. If you want the hyper of hypers, get the schoeps (I don't regret it).

You are near trew right? go there!

CS-1 is a mic forever in search of a nitche. Only thing that distinguish it is it's short length making it ideal for camera mounted but who would shell out $700 for a camera mic? Doesn't sound horrible, doesn't sound great; average pickup pattern, high noise. Too average to be expensive, too expensive to be a bargin mic.

BTW, run and gun is not a synonym for on-camera mic. Please don't use interchangeably.

Cheers

I apologize for the run and gun statement. I mean one man band b-roll/eng on camera mic stuff.

Does your smiley face have a beer? Rad!

Actually was referring to this reference. Not trying to be grammer police but just like the ENG confusion I wanted to nip it in the bud.

 Beer for all

Sorry, that was a reference to a recent thread where someone used ENG interchangeable with on-camera mic. Guess that just confused the issue even more. It's no biggie, just a pet peeve that leads to a lot of confusion.

Cheers

as i know sanken never intend to make something that is not camera mic with cs-1 , the microphone is ok but not more from that IMO - as almost japaniese companies they mainly looking to match the local broadcast companies whicj usially their best castomers so i will not surprise igf that one was made for camera use mainly oplication . so it is not tight enouth and not wide enouth and dont have the usiallcharacteristics of hyper cardioid .
good mic but if i had to choose boom one it would defenetly been at-4073 and if i was need hyper the mbho is way nicer sounding for the same money ( 603+500).
if someone really like get wide short gun whic sounds not bad in enteriars , better look for used neuman 81( could be found for 650-800 on ebay ) . exellent sound , very short much nore forgiving then any other off axis .
could be abit problematic in hy humidity situation .

sorry, it was a mistake i wrote 71 in a privius post

length the 4071 is a long shotgun , the 1 is much narrow pattern , the 4073 sounds much better

Oleg, what do you think of the Oktava as an on camera mic? The camera will be the HVX, being used mainly in P2 mode which is somewhat "silent".
