Got my first GOOD lavalier microphone today and ran some tests with it.
I have the Sennheiser 100 ew2 ENG set with both belt and plug-on transmitters. When getting a better lav I wanted it to work with cable to get max sound quality, but also with radio link. Getting either other COS-11 versions would have made it one style mic only (as I understand it), as phantom version would not work with 100 ew2 transmitter, and the radio mic version would not work without 9 volts from the transmitter or recorder, which neither DVX100 nor Fostex FR-2 can supply, they have nil or phantom only.
So, I just plugged the battery powered Sanken COS-11sBP to the plug-on transmitter. I compared it with normal Sennheiser 100 ew2 belt transmitter by walking around the house (max 3 brick walls between the transmitter and reciever) and outside the house to the mailbox. No difference in signal quality, no dropouts. Thus it seems that the battery holder on COS-11sBP works just fine as an antenna for the plug on transmitter! Of course the plug-on is a bit clumsy compared to the beltpack transmitter, but it works just fine all the same.
What comes to sound quality, Sanken sounds fuller and more natural than the cheap Sennhaiser that comes with the 100 ew2 set, it was also bit less noisy. That was no surprice. But in a pinch the Sennheiser mic is also usable.
