Sam Mendes to direct next bond movie!

Could be good, but Marc Forester (sp?) proved acclaimed director doesn't always equal success.

True, but I give the producers points for thinking outside the norm. Peter Morgan is writing the script as well, who did great work on The Queen, The Last King of Scotland and Frost/Nixon.

They can't save the franchise. The new characters suck. It's over, it's dead.

Old Bond had class and style. The new guys have **** for brains. End of franchise.

As of tonight Sam is NOT hired as the director (still in negotiations about that part of it) but has been hired on as a consultant. This is not a done deal though.

Sam Mendes for Bond? I think we can expect beautiful cinematography. That's one aspect that has been consistent in his films.

In other breaking news, Transformers 3 will be directed by Lars Von Trier. They just announced the new Villain, a giant Penis shaped Robot that transforms into a, well, dildo... (sorry, bad joke)

I wonder when they'll approach Nolan for a Bond film, I'm guessing after Mendes. Nolan is a big Bond fan.

I think Bond would be boring after Batman. Bruce Wayne/Batman has more layers and more directions you can go with than Bond.

It depends. You can make Bond as deep as you like, because to be honest we don't really know that much about him, behind those killing eyes. There is much possibility, and still three remaining Flemming books to draw inspiration from, with regards to plot.

I have utter faith in Nolan to produce a great movie from any Novel or comic series.

As long as the Broccoli's are controlling the franchise it will continue to be the same old Bond formula. They turned down an offer from Tarantino to do Bond because his ideas were too radical for them. I'm in the minority, but I thought Casino Royale was just a fresh coat of paint on the same old Bond. They didn't take the opportunity to peer deeper into the character and do a true origin story. It was entertaining to a degree and Craig was great in the role, but they really need to take that character to another level.

They need to have the next bond infaltrate the taliban and have him bend Osama over for 2 hours.

I'm one of the rare few that really didn't like Casino Royale much. Yes, Daniel Craig is probably the best Bond since Connery, but it still was a very conservative departure from the campy previous Bonds. The opening parcour scene is so absurd and over the top that completely put me off of the so called new "realistic" approach of the film.

Now is the Bond franchise something that would benefit from a "Dark Knightesque" reimaging? Maybe. Craig certainly is an actor capable of much more complex and demanding roles in terms of character. What they need, however, is a great director- Sam Mendes is one- and, of course, a very, very good villain- a character, however, that has to be complex and that imposes respect. The Dark Knight worked because Villain and hero were very well balanced. How about Kevin Spacey for Bond Villain? Of course, not the "Superman Returns" Kevin Spacey but the Se7en Kevin Spacey. That would be brilliant. Spacey or There Will Be Blood's protagonist.

Expect solid characters and acting from Mendes as well as the camera work as previously mentioned. I think Mendes is the perfect guy to bring the deepness of character that I think we all would like to see mixed with the great action and scope Bond is known for. Mendes does NOT take a project he can't dig deep into...so hearing he could be a possibility makes this the most exciting Bond movie ever for me.
