Salt

Saw this movie today and it was bad. They desperately wanted to Angelina Jolie to be Jack Bauer in this one but she just never pulled it off. Instead of looking badass she just looks tired, dejected and dare I say it...old. The story is ludicrous and makes no sense if you think about it for more than a few seconds (see below), the action is below average, and PG-13 at that. It seems like Jolie always manages to conveniently "knocks out" the good guys instead of having to actually kill them, which makes the CIA, the Secret Service and the police all look like idiots. Very very underwhelming movie and judging from how it ended they were actually hoping to make a franchise out of this. Salt would be 10x better if they just get Kiefer Sutherland to play the lead and call it Bauer.

SPOILER BELOW!!

So the Russians were worried that Jolie might have gone native and not carry out her mission so they sent in some guy to blow her cover and force her to act. This makes zero sense. If she has not gone native why would they risk upsetting her carefully laid plan to kill the Russian President and possibly getting her arrested? Did they just assume that she would be able to just bust out of a building full of CIA operatives with no prior preparation? How the hell did she manage to get out of the interrogation room anyway since we never saw it? Why not just kidnap her husband and blackmail her into doing it? They've ALREADY kidnapped him but they didn't even bother to tell her they have him until the mission was already completed, so what was the point? Also they didn't tell her what the second phase of the mission was (assassinate the US President) or even give her any details at all until she was at the White House already. So yes, apparently these guys expected her to just make up a plan to kill the US President on the spot. They waited decades for their plan to come to fruition and they staked it all on their operative's improv ability. Idiots.

It was originally written as a male lead, Edwin Salt, but was tailored for Jolie. Sounds like they got it wrong. Both screenplays are due up online any day and it's going to be interesting to see how they changed.

I actually enjoyed it. It was great fun, definitely entertaining. While it was a bit over the top in some sequences and the plot a bit, well, "streched", narratively speaking it was much better than a movie like "Clash of the Titans".

Jolie did a solid job. There's one particular key scene that really shows she was the right one for the job (a serious scene, not "that" kind of scene :) ).

All in all, a fun night at the movies: action packed, nice twists in the plot that keep you guessing, solid acting, and REAL STUNTS and no fake 3D. A breath of fresh air from all the CG fest and crappy conversions out there nowadays.

I enjoyed it too. I hated the ending, but that's really no surprise for me and movies these days. I honestly walked into this movie, much like I do most other movies now without a clue as to the backstory. I was entertained, albeit with over the top action and hardly thought of the story. Its a popcorn flick, not Inception.

I'm with Hunter - walked in totally clueless, was entertained, and left. Didn't feel ripped off in $$ or time which unfortunately puts it in the top 10% these days.

Off topic ***** - at $8 a tub, you think they could at least cook popcorn properly? Burnt rubber. So sucks.

I enjoyed it. Yes, I thought the action scenes were ridiculous in terms of unrealistic. But, what movie isn't?? Kept me guessing. I wasn't sure if I liked her character or not but that was some of the fun of it. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a fun action adventure movie who doesn't need a movie to solve all of the deep rooted questions of the universe. Entertainment achieved.

I enjoyed it as well. It's not like it's a Michael Bay film where you have to really shut off your brain to try and enjoy it for anything other than Megan Fox. It's a popcorn flick, but an enjoyable one worth the money.

I'm sorry, but I gotta say, that was so increadably predictable. Maybe one or two twists that I didn't see coming, but afterwards you just knew where it was going and could see the ten other twists a mile away. I enjoyed the film, but what bugged me was the predictability. Maybe it's just me...

Well, for me, having one or two twists in a genre film like this that truly surprises is already something, IMO. Compare this to, say, how "unpredictable" "Casino ROyale" was, and this is a real surprise!

Its not at the level of Bourne, but it comes close enough to deserve a watch. As someone so eloquently said, it was worth the price of admission, and I agree. Just came out from seeing Despicable Me in 3D. Now that-s a film that's a waste of money. A sub-par generic animation film.

Just watched Salt today. Was a nice "get out of work early on a Friday afternoon" matinee. I wasn't expecting much so my expectations were met. It wasn't the best story (why did the CIA expend so much energy going after her -- someone who might kill someone but hasn't done anything yet -- when they just witnessed someone else kill three of their own??? Doesn't make a bit of sense).

But, alas, it was a decent action flick. Nothing great. Nothing terrible. Good watch the first time. Probably won't watch a second.

I just couldn't buy Jolie, say around 100lbs, overpowering these huge, trained, double agents.

Jolie literally bouncing off walls and knocking guys out w/one shot simply isn't plausible.

I don't want to come off as sexist but, I just don't think there is any way a woman of that size could take down a male soldier trained in combat; even if she is a super spy.

Hilarious clip! I forgot about that guy... Roger Moore was the weakest link in the 007 chain. They had to put some larger-than-life characters around him to keep you from dozing off.

Love that film. Its a Bond moving spoofing a Bond movie. Camp from beginning to end, laughs all the time.

I would love to see Tarantino's take n Royale or the Bond franchise. I'm sure it would be great, with some of this humour, but with more class :)
