In Oakland, I read a sad story in the paper. A 11 y.o. child was separated from his parents by the courts, at the child's request. Apparently the parents were split-up and while living with the father, he was beaten for any infraction. Before that, when he lived with his mother the same thing happened.
But in a rare case, the court allowed the child to "divorce" his parents and choose where and who he wanted to live with.
He told the court he wanted to live with someone that couldn't beat anyone, even if their life depended on it.
He told the court:
"I want to live with the Oakland Raiders"
