But the invention also raised a perplexing question when university lawyers abruptly demanded a 25 percent ownership stake and two-thirds of any profits. Who owns the patents and copyrights when a student creates something of value on campus, without a professor's help?

I can see how a uni could expect a cut from anything an employee creates, since the employee is being paid to do the work.

But a student is paying the uni. The uni's participation in anything a student creates should be treated more like a work for hire. The uni already got "their cut" when the student forked over the tuition.
