Sacrifices

So as I eat my Chef Boyardie and my Ramen noodles and half peanut butter sandwiches...for lunches and dinners...

all for some new gear...

I started thinking about you guys...my DVXuser family! :)

Anybody like me...having to make sacrifices when wanting new gear?

OR...for you guys who have already been where I am...What have you had to give up in the past to get to where you are today? I know some of you have kids and families...I imagine it's even harder now!

Anyways...Here's to hardworkers and their sacrifices! Cheers!

Re: Sacrifices

I was just informed yesterday that I have to pay $1,200.00 in damages for some stupid **** I did saturday. That comes straight out of gear money. I need to sacrifice ever leaving the house again  >:( . That's the second weekend in a row I'm liable for damages.

Omega! nice...If I ever make good money, I'll buy you one so you'll never have to pawn it again!

Null...if that was you who backed into my car, I'm going to be pissed! :D

Re: Sacrifices

I posted some details, re-read it and I just can't leave that up, it's just that freaking stupid. I'd be the first guy banned from DVXUser.com for being truly stupid.

Pardon the language but simply put: "We got f****d up and did some f****d up s**t". (House of 1,000 Corpses anyone?)

(Hey Am, what was the model and make of your car and where was it saturday?...Just kidding ;D)

EDIT: Just read Jarreds last post (the chill post: http://www.dvxuser.com/cgi-bin/DVX2/YaBB.pl?board=Offtopic;action=display;num=1089868975) so I edited the profanity here, sorry if it offended anyone (It is an actual line from that movie btw, didn't mean to impose an R rating on anyone)...

Re: Sacrifices

LOL haha! that was great...

Sorry to hear Null...wait a sec...

QUICK, eat your camera, claim insanity!!!

Re: Sacrifices

I missed Null's story:(.

Anyway, I'm with you Am, Broke ass college student using one MQ tape over and over and over again (for test shots of course). BTW, what should I do? Buy all my books or a Mattebox? CHOICES!!!

Re: Sacrifices

Sorry Null to hear about the damage, still didnt quite get the lingo references but never the less a bro in distress is not to be dismissed. & Am pro, I am married with a kid & 1 on the way, man even setting dosh aside for something needs alot of thought. I'm a great home built thinker.

Re: Sacrifices

thanks man! What's funny is I try to joke around, and I feel stupid so I delete all my posts...I'd be at 1000...

Hey TC my last math class before I got my AA, I passed and never bought the book...now that I think about it...
I bought my 100A and still got an A! :)

If you need to shoot something important, buy the mattebox, you can wait a little while with books...You'll make the right choice...

Of course I haven't made my car payment in 2 month's so I can buy my crane... :( haha

Re: Sacrifices

Some of this may sound completely stupid and it may not be applicable to all but it worked wonders for me...

(*) Go and buy a large plastic jar from Wal-Mart or the like. Dump your change in to it at first, then anything smaller than a $5.00, then $10.00 the $20.00, so you work up to emptying your pockets of everything less than a $20.00s at the end of your day, throw it in the jar and FORGET ABOUT IT. It (a) enforces a budget on yourself and (b) you will be AMAZED at how it can add up (maybe not for a camera but that “cool filter you wanted” or that “new plug-in you really need”).

(*) Take care of one credit card (again if possible) strictly i.e. even if it's a 'starter' card of $300.00 or so, pay it completely off every month. Credit companies evaluations are automated and you would again be amazed at how quickly they'll bump you up. There are the usual and significant pitfalls obviously, don't EVER harm your credit. Have more than one? Kill of as many and focus on your 'best' one. I had a starter back in the day that was like $200.00 and ended being pushed to $5,000.00. Again, take care to keep in your range.

(*) Grants: (I know, I know, just bear with me). Your production company will employ people during shoots right? (not full time, just contract help). I used to work for the fed and I was constantly amazed at the grants people got. Best example: I know I guy personally who received up to $250,000.00 to build a (best part) hearing testing facility. Now, he does indeed manufacture very small parts that benefit the hearing impaired but the majority was spent on a massive recording studio. The bottom line to the gov? He created jobs for people even though they were one offs ($150.00 for engineering one day session etc). Same applies here, you're generating tax revenue for the gov and employeeing (all be it short contract work). Business plan + hire a grant writer = maybe? (the worst is they'll say no) I mean come on, everyone knows the story of the grant given to the scientists studying cow gas right? (bovine methane impact on environment or something) You're in fact opening a small business, keep it reasonable and your chances are very good.

Bottom line here, don't ever quit or get down, if this is going to hopefully be your lifes work whether big time or just so you can pay your bills doing something you love there's always something that can be done. Money is trash and a hurdle, your life is priceless, eating cans of the Chef B builds character. Good luck!

(Did this one make up for my "stupid" post?  ;D)

Re: Sacrifices

Thats a really good idea about the jar. I used to do the change thing when I was a kid. I never though of bumping it up to larger amounts. Only problem with that is that I have a Debit Card tied to my Checking account. So it's rare that I have any actual currency in my wallet.

I learned 2 things last semester.

1. ALWAYS BUY THE LECTURE NOTES.

2. If you have lots of work to do in your classes. And you get assigned to do a short 10 minute movie for your film class, don't spend every waking hour on the film, and forget about the rest. Definitaly learned that one the hard way.:(

*HAHA, I too am trying to make up for my earlier disgresions regarding inapropriate posts.

Re: Sacrifices

Wow AM thanks for the offer.. i will carefully watch your career so i will know when to take you up on your very kind offer.. lol

I can't even do that! :) I do know what you're saying though...for the first time...right now...my credit card finally has 0.00 dollars! I'm going to take your advice and use it, but then pay it off every month!
it was a sad day.. But all is well now.. :)
And that's what counts! Thanks, everyone, for the comments.
