hey hey. im new here and will start with a basic question if all you guru's could lend me some advice.

first things first, id like some feedback on what the prefered line between your PC and camera is, Svideo or Firewire. What are the pros and cons? ???

thanks in advance, and nice to see such a helpful group pf people!

Re: S Video or Firewire

Firewire.

Hey! That was easy!

*EDIT: Now that I think about it, can you even edit using an S cable hook up?

Re: S Video or Firewire

there is a Svideo in/out on the camera, so i would asume. Ive seen others talking about using Svideo, i picked up a monster cable firewire 4 to 6 pin. its up to 400mbs, wasnt sure how that rated compared to Svideo.

thanks for the reply! :)

Re: S Video or Firewire

Use Firewire. S-video givs a lower quality. The camera must transfer from digital to analog and the pc from analog to digital. Evry transfer givs lower quality.

excuse my english

Re: S Video or Firewire

Also, if you're using Svideo to import footage, your computer is doing the compressing using whatever codec and file format the software and hardware uses. This means that you can easily end up with files that reflect neither the original size nor the original resolution of the native DV image on your tape.

Re: S Video or Firewire

Use firewire to capture the image. It's digital and full quality of the original.
S-Video is useful for viewing the results. Most editors have a true video monitor to check the results (color, contrast, etc) and for that you can output fire to a deck or camera and from either of those use S-video to go to the monitor.
