i am a high school student interested in filming and producing short films and documentaries..with my summer's work money i bought a panasonic ag-450
S-vhs camera. It was 150 bucks compared to the 800 dollar list on B&H photo..so its was technically a steal..i know i have been ridiculed by my friends thats its big and old (manufacturing date was a month after i was born) but it creates a very nice picture while im recording and viewing it after im finished shooting..when i capture it to vegas through a tv capture card very noticable lines are viewable and moderately distracting.. Does anyone have any good methods to cover this up and improve picture quality without having the solution be "buy a new camera you antique collector"

it does appear in the final copy of a small documentary i made for school using vegas, a majority of the time its very noticable in light areas of the footage such as the sky or a white car.. but its definatly the footage that i captured to my computer not my viewing source..

Sorry I can't help your specific problem (other than suggesting the blur), but I'm glad to see someone happy to learn on something other than really expensive gear. In addition to this being a wise financial decision, your work, if done well, will have a certain charm to it for using older technology. Focus on learning good technique, motivated cinematography, and telling interesting stories. If you learn those things, it won't matter nearly as much what camera you're using. Good luck!

I got a Canopus ADVC 300 analog-to-digital video converter, and I've run all my Hi8 and VHS video through it, then into Vegas. It's really improved the quality of my old stuff. Canopus makes several different models for all prices, but maybe you can find one used on the net. You'll need to get one eventually, no matter how good a camera you get, if you want to use any of your old format video.

I used to use a WinTV card too, back when I started exploring video... Toss it. It's ok to play with, but it also won't get you the quality you are looking for.

I even have an old Canopus DV Storm that I could sell reeeeeal cheap. The Firewire port blew, but it does have s-vid in and out. Canopus replaced the firewire for free once, they might do it again if you should ever need it.

idk if this is allowed in the forum or not but how much would you want for it? (i wouldnt need the firewire port b.c i dont have a camera that uses it..)

Well... I found a DV Storm 2 for around $400 on ebay, I figure it would be worth maybe $140 with the dead firewire? Comes with the Canopus software and books. Sound good to you?

hey srry i relized after i sent the responce that i dont really have that much money i could part with (me being a high school student trying to pay for gas) so maybe if i get the money i could contact you but right now i cant really handel it and ill just have to go with my sad wintv card that i already had... thanks anway hope you understand

I really do understand. I spent around $1,000 for it 4 years ago, and tried to keep it in a range you could afford. I'm in no big hurry to get rid of it, so mow some yards and save up.
