The City of Riverside, in their benevolence, has cancelled our permit today for the final day of shooting on Saturday. This is due to a "political protest" occurring in the city on the same day.

I have 15-20 military actors coming in, not to mention the lead cast, and 50+ zombies.

ERRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!! We cannot reschedule, way too much money in rentals expended. Canceling is out of the question too.

Scouts are combing the county now for a suitable location.

Throw a b*tch fit to your local media and see if that helps. I would bet that a local journalist would eat that sh*t up. Don't just contact the local daily paper. Contact the local TV station(s), the local news radio station (especially if the they are politically opposed to the demonstrators). Give your story to the local alternative weekly. Press the press to press the pols. Local politicians hate bad press. Give them sh*t!! Loudly.

You may want to have, as a last resort compromise plan, an offer to shoot your gig, concurrently with the protest. (Like Haskell Wexler's "Medium Cool"). Your production can adjust your location a little bit, but INCLUDE shots of the protest, and work that into your story. This may be not what is planned, but it also might be a real boost to your production values. This also could be pitched as way to marginalize the protesters (Which the city fathers my find attractive). Of course, that would take some smooth Schmoozing to pull off, but it is worth a try. If you are worried about consent to shoot the protestors, put up big disclaimer signs, saying that you are filming, and that an individuals choice to enter the area you are shooting in, equals consent to be filmed. The city fathers may also like that.

Good luck.

David, It worked!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the city councilmembers not only found a us a decent location, but re-instated our permit!!!!!!!!

Back in business! The 20K is back out of being down the drain.

Ahhh, the feeling of having an amazing day of production. Body is sore, slept 12 hours last night.

This has been a real experience for me, being a "Producer", as well as the technical advisor, stuntman and armorer. I can honestly say, this film will set a benchmark for "student films".

I am going to link everyone to a couple of flickr pages to see what we did before this weekend. This weekends pics won't be available for a while.

If anyone is in Riverside, and sees Councilman Mike Gardner, please thank him for being a supporter of indie/student filmmaking. It would not of happened without him.

Very cool production photos, I can only imagine the budget. That graffiti area, is that where they shot Transformers?

I am not sure. You would be surprised at the budget. Very low. It was a matter of showing people what we were going to do, and what has been done by the production "company" in the past. Mind you, this is a film club at UCLA "FPS Productions": www.fps-productions.com

And getting talented individuals together with the exact same goal, knowing in the end what the result would be is priceless.

Let's just say under 20K for the budget, mostly sponsors.

Glad it worked out for you, it didn't work out for Noah in "Tokyo Angel" he had permit, everything in place, Japanese subway coordinator kicked him out for no apparant reason, even with all the paperwork done.

It really is hard for a filmmaker to predict these things so I'm glad to see it worked out for you.
