Hey guys. I'm new to this forum and relatively new to cinematography (I've just been producing shorts with the HVX200 for a year or so)
I have been doing alot of research on Depth of Field, as well as the science behind lenses and not just what works, but how it does. I have a real hunger for this kind of knowledge. It seems to pay off on set
Anyways, when it comes to Depth of Field, why do you get a deeper Depth of field by using a wider lens, then a telephoto?
Is it only because the telephoto has a narrower field of view and compresses and magnifies the background?
Or do wide angle lenses inherently have longer Depth of Focus? (not depth of field)
This whole depth of field thing gets very heady, but it is seemingly the foundation of a cinematographers knowledge, seeing that whats in focus and what's not is so crucially important.
Also, why to larger apertures create shallower DOF's?
Is it because they force the rays of light to converge obliquely and not more parallel, causing them to create larger circles of confusion?
I just need clarification
and, lastly, how to Depth of Field and Depth of Focus correlate? are they directly related?
