Rycote S Series

Yes, I have it. Little plastic shock mounts are good, and easy to change the mic.
Balance is unusual. I put mine together backwards to help to have the weight forward.
There is probably enough room inside to add a foam windscreen on the mic for extra wind protection. I also took off the XLRF on the inside that connects to the mic and put on a K-Tek right angle connector.. less weight... helps balance.. and more space inside.

Depending on how much it is, you may want to look at K-tek's K-zepp. It's very well thought of (as are all k-tek products) and a great value for the price.

Thanks for the link to the review.
Army of Darkness special edition sits on my shelf as well.

the s series is great, ive tried em out - about the same amount of protection as the k-zepp, but much easier to work with.

that said, i hate rycote and love k-tek, so i cant wait for them to release an update on the k-zepp to catch up with this new approach!

is k-tek planning to update their zepp system any time soon? do you know anything about that?

JM

not that i know of, but k-tek is an innovative company that is always pushing new ideas, so it wouldnt suprise me. the zepp is already in its 2nd design now, and has been for quite some time... so hold thumbs!

Putting a foam windshield inside a basket does *not* give extra protection - it gives *less* protection.

Wind protection comes from the volume of still air around the mic.. Adding a foam windshield decreases the volume of still air and will give less protection.

It is s a common belief that adding a foam windshield makes it better, but it's rubbish.

Sorry to disillusion you.

You're absolutely correct, dead air space is what a mic needs surrounding it in order to deal with wind movement. Foam alone does not do it.
