Rycote Duck?

Any experiences with it? I saw it at NAB and it seems like an amazing new rain guard that should work with any brand zeppelin. I'd love to hear a field report about it's usefulness.

None, but I know what product your talking about. I would be concerned that it will effect the sound or if its a "windy rain" thats not going to really help after the softie is soaked.. and your microphone is destroyed from the water damage. I might order one and check it out for you. I'll also talk to our product development team and see if we can't make something similar (but better).

Hope this helps you,
John

The Duck is excellent - I know the designer.

Basically the foam takes the energy out of the rain (so you don't get the plip plop noises like an umbrella does) and the rain then soaks through the foam and runs off the nylon underside without getting to the microphone.

Looks funny, but very effective.

Bumping this old thread. Anyone else out there used a Rycote Duck and care to comment?

Most people don't bother.

But the Rycote Duck is an excellent design and works extremely well.

It's made from open-cell foam with a waterproof base - the idea is that the foam stops the rain making a noise as it hits the windshield; it quickly soaks through the foam and then harmlessly runs off the sides.

It keeps the windshield and windjammer well protected and dry without making a noise like an umbrella does.
