Russian music

I know this may be off-topic but I tried the audio forum here with no luck so far. As a director where would you go to find copyright-free Russian folk music? I'm just looking for a plaintive balalaika tune or two to use in a short. I play guitar and mandolin myself but I think learning the balalaika would be beyond the call of duty.

why don't you find something you like and ask permission? I've found that I can often get free use for an indie film just by asking.

alternatively, look up the local Greek or Russian culture and see if you can someone to play for you.

Thanks, Dick. Both good ideas -- it might be a kick to actually record somebody playing a balalaika. My local library also ordered some Russian music CDs from other libraries, which I'll check out. If I find anything appropriate I'll take your suggestion and just ask and see if I can use it for free. (Probably send them a generic release form?) Garageband has some usable sounding Spanish, Cuban, Greek, Indian, etc. tracks -- but alas no Russian or Slavic.

Thanks Steve! I checked out this site and it will be a valuable resource. Don't know if it has exactly the right music I need for this particular project, but very close. And it is so easy to use, and getting permissions and documentation so cheap -- I highly recommend it to others making low-budget indies.

I wish I had Soundtrack Pro -- still only have FCE 4. Hmm -- I still have an uninstalled trial version of Soundtrack from a previous version of FCE. I wonder if I installed that, and it contained balalaika, if I could use it permanently. Yes, I think it's worth a shot....
