Russian Ark

Re: Russian Ark

indeed it is. it was nice to see long lines for this one in LA when it showed. even here, in shallowlands, a strike for pure art captures some imaginations.

Re: Russian Ark

Haven't seen it yet. But I heard they had to create a special harddrive system so that it could record more than 60 min. of continuous footage.

One continuous shot! Could this be the end of editors as we know it! :'(

;D

Re: Russian Ark

I can't see any trailers, but it look like an interesting movie. Do they have a DVD?

Re: Russian Ark

Ya there is a DVD. It has some great features. The movie on its own is OK. But the feat is unbelievable.
The museum that they shot at would only close for one day for them to shoot. The stories on how they actually got the film shot are very impressive.

Re: Russian Ark

Yeah, the DVD special features are quite interesting. I think the film itself is better enjoyed if you know some Russian history - without it, you will be missing stuff, and it won't probably come out the same for you.

It's really interesting how knowledge of particular culture/history affects your understanding or appreciation of film. I still don't understand many American films because I didn't grow up here. On the other hand, I love 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' - being a Czech, I totally connect with the film in a wonderfully depressing sort of way, and I think (judging from reactions of people who have seen it) that it is mostly misunderstood by North American audience - even if they like it, they rarely get the point. The trouble is - I can't even explain the point myself. I just feel it.

Same with Russian Ark - it's not just the amazing feat of shooting a film in one take, or all the art they show in it. I think it builds on the Russian orthodox iconography, but not being a Russian myself, I have only a partial understanding of what's going on. That said, I've got the DVD and I like it.

Re: Russian Ark

Yes, it look very impressive, i agree with the snow scene; Disjecta, make me want to see more of it. This location is just amazing.

Re: Russian Ark

Not to disagree - the location IS amazing (check out http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/Hermitage Museum). But the snow scene is fairly short, basically going from one room to another through one of the courtyards. The DVD mentions that - they didn't want to spend too much time outside to avoid fogging the lens when they got back in. I guess that would be the end of one take film...

I absolutely love the final shot of the film (and the trailer), with the steam raising out of the water (presumably the Neva river on which banks the Hermitage stands).

Re: Russian Ark

Yes, I must shoot some steam on my lake :) Today my trusty ducks are standing on top of the water. Part of the lake has frozen over.

Re: Russian Ark

Disjecta, how big is that Pine Lake of yours? If it's small, it probably freezes over too quickly, so you may never see the effect. I don't mean little misty veil here and there, I mean STEAM literally dancing on top of water.

The best conditions are large body of water with a sudden drop in temperature. We had that on Lake Ontario on Christmas Eve, but I was too busy getting ready for the holiday, and when I finally got to my camera on 26th, it was gone :(.

But I did some other snow shooting, and must say, DVX on snow is just awesome!

Re: Russian Ark

Jerry, the lake is 88 acres and there is plenty of steam rising from it some mornings...it just sits there like dry ice...

It has only frozen over once in the last 10 years.

Re: Russian Ark

your photography is really beautiful, disjecta! do you make these films (and i've seen some of the other one's you've posted with footage from this area) for a commercial purpose or just for yourself?

and, jerry, i totally agree with you about the russian ark and having to know russian history/culture. my background is russian and i felt like i could relate to a lot of events because they were chosen for their specific meaning within the context of the russian idea. i don't know how they would translate to audiences not familiar with them. i think that's when the technical merits of the achievement get more attention.

Re: Russian Ark

Whatcha talking about! I LOVED this video! The segment with the mouse and racoons was awesome! Straight from "Mission Impossible: Tales of Pine Lake"!

But the steam... hmmm. Too bad I don't have anything to show, so it's hard to brag. And I don't want to shoot you down, either, you being a very fine cinematographer...

All I'll say is - this ain't no steam! This is mist, fog, or something of that sort (beautiful shots, though). Steam is something that goes straight into the clouds. Just like I said the other day - you don't know what you don't know. Meant in the friendliest and most sincere way.
