Rush: movie review

King of Australia
Disclaimer: I'm not into Formula 1.

Acting was superb. Great script, great everything, you're emotions are pulled in all directions. Everything about this movie is excellent. The one tiny criticism I have is below.

After Niki has his accident, his wife never kisses him

4.5/5

Fellas you can take your girls to this one too, it's an excellent drama, think they'd like it.

Really enjoyed this film.

SPOILERS BELOW.

I think your criticism is valid, but I think Howard made a point of not being melodramatic about Lauda's ordeal. The man was very practical, and while in the film, we can see the pain he endures, both inside and out, I think the character would have been undercut by too much sentimentalism with his wife. I also thought it showed a unique dynamic to their relationship, in that theirs never really seemed to be the intimate, sensitive, romanticism of modern culture, but more of a pragmatic affection like you find in movies about Victorian English nobility. It was clear that she cared deeply about him and was there for him through it all, and then at the end, even though he doesn't directly admit it (and again, Howard brilliantly avoided emotional melodrama), I felt like a large part of the reason he stepped off that track was for her.

In any case, this film brought Howard back to the forefront of my imaginary top directors list (Angels & Demons took him off for a while <grin>), and showed again that Hemsworth can act. But most importantly, it revealed Daniel Bruhl as an actor to pay attention to. One of the best performances of this year, I thought.

SPOILERY @@@@@@@@@@@@

You're right Eric. Although I understood Niki and his Wife's 'odd' lack of affection I suppose I just expected something after the crash from her. Another example of Niki's lack of physical intamcy was his little speech just before marrying her.

I pretty much only went to see the film because I knew it would be quality from Howard too as I wasn't overly interested in the subject matter.

Same here. Not a huge fan of racing or sports movies of any kind, really, though the classics do have their place. Mostly what drew me to see the film on its opening night was the character of Niki Lauda. He seemed interesting in the trailers, and while the marketing focused mostly on Hemsworth for the American audience at least, I had a feeling Lauda was the one I'd relate to in the film. I was surprised to enjoy the James Hunt character arc just as much.
