rumors of what this means

That doesn't seem likely to me.

I speak as an Olympus visionary. I just visited their main R&D facility in Japan and met with many of the senior people there. They are very focussed on doing better video so watch this space :-)

Sure didn't seem to me like they were being taken over with what's in the works.

Another thing to remember with Olympus is that most of their income actually comes from medical imaging. They are by far and away the outright leaders in endoscopes and borescopes and the majority of their sales and revenue is from the very highly profitable medical side of the business.

The imaging business is the very reason the medical business is so far ahead of other competitors.

"the camera division has led development of technology in the medical field and other areas,"

Photokina has just changed to a yearly from a bi-yearly event. Olympus have a 100th anniversary coming up. I think you'll find something will be in the works to mark that event. Which is next year. Not this year.

is it that time of year again when a company reduces their presence at a trade show and the world thinks they are about to no longer exist? The presence at a trade show means absolutely nothing about the future of a company. Trade shows are really only useful to startups that nobody knows about yet or if there are a ton of amazing new products to generate press buzz over.

Would love to see the video competition between olympus and panasonic heat up in m43. I think BMD is showing the platform has a lot of life in it.

A GH6 or Olympus with 4k 10-bit 60p, internal ProRes Raw, 13 stops DR, 120fps 8-bit 4k, GH5S lowlight + GH5 IBIS/Dual IS system, a more "raw" mode of processing image data without electronic corrections and over sharpening, etc... mmm... :)
