Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

I think there's a typo in the atomos page: somebody forgot to divide by 8 to go from megabits to megabytes.
2.5 hours in 2TB is exactly 220 MB/s, not 220 Mbps (which would mean 2.5 hours in 250GB).
Write and see if they confirm their numbers.

Forget Atomos's numbers and go with Apple's. Atomos aren't allowed to mess with the codec. Prores 4k is 4x 1080p Prores, we're not talking complex math here :cheesy:

I trying to decide whether I should get a Pix 240i for the higher bit rate of Prores 4444 or a Shogun to do the 4k to 2k 10bit conversion. I've broken 422HQ in the past. I don't get why Atomos don't have a Prores 4444 recording option.

If I ever use an external recorder on the a7s, it will be for recording 4K (hopefully on something smaller and cheaper than a Shogun; maybe a Ninja 3 in 2015?)

With the hdmi out of the camera being 4:2:2 PR 4444 would be an overkill (and still 8 bit). 4k to 2k 10bit should be better and true 4:4:4 as a bonus.

It's not overkill at all. I post convert all my 8bit files to Prores 4444. Prores 422HQ introduces some shadow artefacts and tends to accentuate 8bit banding. The less you compress the 8bit source the better.

I bet we see a 4k Ninja before the end of the year. I'm tempted to get a Shogun for the GH4/A7s, but I'm going to try and hold off for a more portable option.

Not to get too OT, but what are you using to convert? Would you mind sharing your workflow?

Not sure why would you include another generation step with post conversion to PR 4444? Pretty much any and all post processing software worth using is working in 16 bits or more anyway?

Is there any new footage or picture sample coming out this new camera? Sony keeps things very quiet on promoting its product...

I haven't seen a single frame other than the sponsored work they showed at NAB. This camera has me on hold from purchasing a GH4 at the moment but I really want to see real world footage from the average user.

Does anyone know if the A7s has a built in timelapse feature. I love not having to carry an intervelometer when using my GH3.

You can download the timelapse app from Sony. I have it on my A7 and A6000, works great. Search YouTube, there's lots of demos.

According to apple, they do not scale linearly, but for the most part you're right.

http://images.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Apple_ProRes_White_Paper_December_2013.pdf

Prores 422 1920x1080 @ 24fps 117Mb/s
Prores 422 3840x216 @ 24fps 471Mb/s

4.02x Larger.

Keep in mind Apple likes to do base 10 calculations, so not sure how that works with megabits per second to actual base 2 gigabytes.

Hi Paul

The same questions are going round in my head too. Slog in 8 bits, good luck.

It seems to be the ideal camera for those people who buy based on printed specs. Sony yet again it seems able to provide us with the camera that we really want at this price point. I'd quite like Compressed 10bit onboard like the Sony Z100 4K Video cam we'll probably have to wait for the next versions of the FS100/700 for that. Sony will no doubt do lots of jiggery pokery so as not to tread on too many toes of the F5 so, yeah, don't expect revolutionary leaps.

I see that it is now available to pre-order in the US for $2500 so in the UK it should be around £1800 inc VAT. I'd certainly pay that if the 35mm crop doesn't suffer from excessive rolling shutter as I'd quite like a stills/video camera for twatting about with on hols.

Does seem the perfect camera for time lapsing star trails....;)

Still no UK price! If the quoted 15 stops is squeezed into 8 bits that would be even worse. Anyway AFAIK Slog2 tops out around 14 stops, that's why Slog3 is around.

cheers
Paul

No UK price worries me. What've they got to hide?

The way I read the 15 stops figure; there should be no excuse for poor white roll off and absolutely no aliasing of the highlights!!! I'm not really interested in the figure just hoping Mr Sony has given us some pleasing curves to work with.

SLog3? Blimey will Sony be charging for a Pro firmware update then? Seems like a nice little tactic to part people from their cash.
