Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

Call them interns and pretend you are doing them a favour building their career.

'Interns', I like it. I'm all about pretending :thumbsup:. Lets not talk about building careers, I'm to blame for Elton John vs PNAU :D

Hey mate.

Yeah s-log would be awesome, it wouldn't surprise me because the A7s is being marketed to us: NAB release right after the A7r and going head to head with the GH4 and 7D MKII?

I wish it was there, but I think Sony, while willing to fight the GH4 on the 4K front, will also want to protect the FS100 and FS700, and even the F5. It needs to fight the GH4 on the resolution front, and they will do that. It will probably have better DR than the GH4 just by sticking to their usual NEX picture styles, and I think that's what they'll do. I'd love to be wrong on this one...

Cosimo!!! WHY don't you look up the word retard? Go ahead, type it in and right click "look up in dictionary". It will say
"delay or hold back in terms of progress, development, or accomplishment: his progress was retarded by his limp." Now you choose to see it as a noun and politically correct. Political correctness has gotten us where? My niece is with Down Syndrome. Are you one that wants to ban the word BOSSY with Beyonce?

Dear Mr Lense,

You are wrong.

Your definition of RETARD is for use as a VERB. You used it as a NOUN.

In the interest of honesty and transparency I've copy and pasted correct definition of RETARD from the same Google source you used earlier:

noun

offensive
  • a person who has a mental disability (often used as a general term of abuse).

I think we can all agree this was your intended meaning. To argue otherwise just makes you look foolish. You should at the very least apologise.

Wonder if the A7S is actually the two-grand cam and Sony's got another little 4K monster tucked away for announcement.

It should be around $2K (A7 is $1700, A7r is $2300), and yes, this sensor would rock on an FS100/FS700 kind of body. Very glad they start with the cheaper option, though, since I don't have the budget for those mid-end cameras.

Very odd, actually. Coming from Sony. I know the mindset of them for more than 20 years, very well indeed. From the mouth of Sony Executives...

Not sure a 4K FS100 would make sense given the FS700 just got its 4K. Then again... Sony's been kind of on about something lately.

Was thinking it was more like a 4K Full Frame handycam deal, what's that other Sony camera what was released last year? Around the same time as the A7R.

Kholi, they are in economic trouble with competitors such as Panasonic on GH4 and Blackmagic with 4K finally in the hands of customers. This is the big truth! Aside the fact, they have 4K displays for sale. Trinitron: who has forgotten it? Don't forget Sony means little son we have at home. And there have been much Samsungs and Panasonic as sons-in-law...

Luckily PS4's doing a lot of work for them, but I can see how the trouble starts a different kind of conversation with those guys.

So, guess we can't rule out a 4K FS100 until it's official.

How is it NOT 2:00 PM yet????

If this thing has 120 fps (or even 96 fps), I'd have no reason to pick up a GH4.

Since their Z2 phone has 120fps, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I wouldn't doubt to pick up any GH series they will launch. It is my favorite camera ever. For stills included.

E :-)

I'm actually looking for something solely to use for quick over cranking alongside Blackmagic cameras. With full frame & likely better DR, the Sony will have an image geared more toward my line of work (narrative films).

I'm not discrediting the GH cameras by any means, the Sony would just suit my needs better (as long as it's capable of high frame rates).

FS700 High Speed cuts really well with 2.5K and Pocket, from my experience anyway.

I get where Ryan's coming from.

So, since it's still two hours to the announcement, you decided to start the usual GH flame war? alright: GH sucks, it looks like video (ducks behind sofa)

Now, seriously...

My thing here is: how much better is the A7s than the A6000?

Things the A6000 already has:
* FF FoV and DoF (with SpeedBooster)
* mostly clean of aliasing/moire (though there's still some)
* good 1080p24
* decent 1080p60
* decent DR (better than Canon 5D2, slightly worse than Nikon D5300) (guessing it's the same as in the 5N)
* clean HDMI out (8-bit)
* very nice screen and EVF
* very nice peaking

Improvements that the A7s brings over the A7000, for sure:
* 4K

You'll notice that's a very short list.

Improvements that the A7s could bring over the A7000:
* better internal codec for 1080p if you record 4K and downsample to 1080p (almost sure)
* completely free of aliasing/moire (quite likely)
* electronic IBIS (I would say 50/50 chance of this: Sony has the tech, and they went for a 1.1x crop factor)
* 10-bit (maybe, but doubt it) and better DR (doubt it)
* higher FPS (doubt it)

If only the first two of this last list come to reality, I think I'd be better off with an A6000+speedbooster+ninja. If the A7s has any of the latter three, it's my next camera.

edit: I bunched 10-bit and better DR together; I think they don't make a lot of sense unless they come together: 8-bit is enough for current DR, and better DR makes no sense without 10-bit

That would probably be the AX100: 4K in a handycam body with a tiny sensor. If they put a big sensor on the thing, it's an AF100/AF700.
(edit: ok, they also have the VG ones...)
