Rumor: Sony A7s will have 4K video

Sounds like I haven't missed much around here :violin: Can't we just all get along?

I'm really interested in this puppy, not so much for the resolution but the incredible low light capability and the 14 stops of dynamic range. Whether that 14 stops is preserved over the HDMI out we'll soon see. Andrew said something about Sony not being able to do 4k on the A7R because of the heat and those Sony bodies are really thin so overheating is a concern. Does anyone know what the rolling shutter is like on the A7R?

I'm pretty content with the resolution on the MK3 RAW but another stop or 2 of dynamic range would be very nice.

I expect very poor rolling shutter performance.

(As someone who most likely will not be buying a GH4.)

I'm not excited about the GH4. I'm tempted to pick up an A6000 for B-cam. Anyone know what the rolling shutter's like?

At this point I don't really see any particularly compelling reason to go for a line skipping 1080p DSLR, to be honest.

Yeah. The beauty of 4k is you can downscale in post and get a very nice 2k image or you can crop and reframe shots.

It's cute.

Only if the A7s has major issues. I've got a D5200 and a Nex 5n I'd replace with it, mostly for stills but I'm sure I could get some some shots out of it.

You know when you think about it this could be the baby Alexa uber cam we've been hoping for. A PL lens adaptable, high DR, 4k, low light demon. It's really down to the codec, rolling shutter, aliasing, and heat. We know the sensor kicks arse. If the codec isn't great I'm hoping Convergent will make the odyssey compatible.

I have a feeling the 1DC is about to go the way of the dinosaur. So glad I couldn't afford one.

Not sure where you got the info that it has 14 stops of DR. That's very unlikely.
Advantage is that it has Vistavision like DOF properties while Alexa is S35 standard cinema. Also, big advantage for me is that it is a Full frame STILL camera too. I've always wanted one. By this time next year, these DSLR's will be superseded by betters so getting a capable still camera would be part of the deal.
I'm really hoping Sony releases this sensor XAVCS combo in a 4K FS200 refresh of the FS100 at NAB. We'll find out soon enough.

Squig is back!

For consistency I need to complete my long-drawn-out part-time no-budget project in 1080p, but with that done, it will be interesting to compare what I'm sure will be several of these affordable 4k cameras available later in the year as a possible next camera. What I've always been interested in though is better dynamic range, so that is the improvement I will really be looking for.

14 stops DXOmark (S7R) but like I said it remains to be seen how much DR there will be in video mode.

Squig is back!

Lulz.

I've been lurking a bit but I've barely touched a camera in months, haven't had much to contribute, too busy with props, wardrobe, etc... I'm shooting a teaser trailer for GAMMA in a few weeks so it would be cool to get my hands on a new camera and put it up against the MK3 raw.

Me too! I'm building an old main frame computer for my next project. Kind've refreshing drilling holes, cutting up circuitboards and painting plyboard.

(Hi Squig)

* What we need here is a log profile that preserves all the DR from the sensor, and a way to record 10-bit footage (I don't mind if it is internally or externally, at 2K or 4K). I doubt Sony will give us that for $2K in 2014, but we'll know soon enough.

* I was also thinking about the a6000 as a replacement for my NEX-5N (here), but there's not much info about it yet. It seems to be a small step forward from the 5N (same codec, colors, DR, etc, just reduced aliasing/moire, plus I would expect no overheating and less rolling shutter), but it's also quite cheap and it comes with a nice EVF.

* Since Andrew is reading this... I saw some aliasing in the a6000 clip you posted (0:29, lens rings), so I would really need a comparison with something else in order to believe the nearly-no-aliasing-or-moire claim (a side-by side with the D5300 that you say is similar in this respect?)

* If the a7s has the same DR as the a6000, I will probably go for the cheaper one: I already have a speedbooster, and I'm not paying $$$$ for 4K.

I'm over it. Looking forward to having enough budget on the sequel to pay slaves.

One thing I can say about Sony is at least when they announce a new camera you can actually purchase and use it in the present life.

* you don't call them slaves, you call them minions
* the a6000 was announced 12-feb and is not available yet; it will take two-and-a-half months between announcement and availability; still much better than blackmagic, of course...

Hey mate.

Yeah s-log would be awesome, it wouldn't surprise me because the A7s is being marketed to us: NAB release right after the A7r and going head to head with the GH4 and 7D MKII?
