Rules For Shooting A Jewish Wedding

Shooting my first Jewish wedding tomorrow in Santa Barbara. Are there any rules or customs I need to observe for the whole day? I want to avoid what occurred when I failed to do my research before shooting my first Catholic wedding....... 'nuff said. Thanks in advance!

Andy, as a fairly new Wedding Videographer (about 10 weddings under our belt) can I ask what I need to know about Catholic weddings? We have not done one yet. Years ago I went to one but remember very little other than it was very long and there was a lot of standing up and sitting down.

Sorry I didn't see this till now. Dependingupon the denomination of the family it could be Reform, Conservative, Orthodoxor Hasid. Naw, not in Santa Barbara,Hasid that is. But you might not be able to shoot until sundown on the Sabbathif they are conservative enough. There are rituals and you should go to aJewish ritual site to see what is common at most weddings.

So, even though the wedding is over I must ask. How did you do shooting your first Horah? I was very lucky on my first one. The photographer gave me a heads up and told me how she did it. In no time I was in the middle, with my old trusty DVX100, getting some great footage. If I had been stuck on the outside I would have had nothing. Since I switched to DLSR it has been even more fun/challenging. I shoot vintage primes and use my Takumar 55mm f2 for every reception. During the Horah I switch quickly to my 24mm. I also base my decision to go inside or outside the circle based on the crowd size and room size. If I choose out I use my monopod extended up to about 12 feet to get an overhead shot. There is no rush in any wedding gig I've done like being in the middle of a heated Horah.
